By the way, lest anybody start trying to talk about the Carrington Super Flare, we can analyze ice cores to reconstruct histories of solar activity, among other things. That was a 500-year flare, and it happened in 1859. We're not due for another one for a while. It is entirely possible that a less severe but still significant flare could hit, which would have the effect of extending visible auroras southwards and probably disrupting electricity in areas near the poles, along with communications for a few days. That's it.
