Hi there. First post regarding Dragon Age, though I've been a Bioware nerd for...a decade. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

Anyway,
I'm doing my second play-through and finding it hard to do a genuine
dark/evil character. Most of my options generally involve being rude to
people and bullying them. However, a lot of the plot points also seem
designed to be played by a 'light side' character. For example, you
still have to try and stop Loghain - there's no option to side with him
until the veeeery end.

Anyway, leaving that aside, Redcliffe
seems a particular problem. There doesn't seem to be any way to start
the assault from the castle without agreeing to get the blacksmith on
side, and the only way to do that is to promise to find his daughter.
Am I right on this? It just seems most annoying that this is another
time where I have to agree to something that the current character
wouldn't do just to advance the plot.

Other notable examples having to find the Urn regardless of your preferences and having to tell the Dalish you'll help them.

Are
there evil ways to avoid doing any of this and still advance the plot?
My first runthrough as a 'good' elf female mage worked perfectly simply
because it seemed to me that the plot was designed to favour that
approach.

If you really want to be evil, you can simply leave Redcliffe after talking to Teagan. I'm about to spoil it for you:

Redcliffe is pretty much null if you leave it.

As for the Owen situation, you can tell him you'll look for her, then don't look for her and after the battle is over you can lie to him and still get the reward.

If you leave Redcliff village without helping at all and then return later, the place is a ghost town. That's pretty evil :D

As far as the Dalish and the ashes are concerned, you'll just have to settle for siccing the werecolves on the former and defiling the latter :(

OK, cool. But what happens regarding the Arl? Do you still have to save him? Can you give me the rundown on what the optimal evil path in the game is vis each treaty? What are the implications for simply despoiling the Urn?

As far as I can tell:

- Side with the Werewolves and wipe out the elves.

- Side with either one of the dwarves.

- Wipe out the mages and gain the Templars.

- ??? for Redcliffe?

Abandon the city, sacrifice Isolde and deal with the Desire Demon ;)

I'd kill the boy. And yes, you have to help Eamon. I'd side with Bhelen in the dwarven quest.

But if you side with Harromont the Dwarves suffer far more. and yeah to be EVIL kill Conner.

Do all of that. And don't forget to side with Branka instead of Caridin (the most evil choice in the game if you ask me) and keep the Anvil to make more golems.

@JasonPogo: Which you can't know when you choose. Bhelen is more a tyrant however, so in my opinion this choice makes more sense for an "evil" person.

OK, cool.

So if I despoil the sacred urn, what happens to Eamon?

Even defiling the ashes, you take a pinch to save Eamon. You cannot not save him, the game won't move forward.

Hehe, yes, Kepha is right. You take a pinch - then you despoil what's left in the urn.

Urg, that's annoying.

Thanks for telling me though.

What's a good despoiling party? I've got a melee rogue, and I was thinking Morrigan, Zevran and Sten. That'll keep the whingers out of the party.

Just don't take Wynne or Leliana - they will attack you and you'll have to kill them. [Unless you're happy with that, of course.]

Although I think Wynne leaves when you get back to camp anyway. They will not tolerate this. This means that unless you're a mage yourself, you'll be left with only Morrigan. So either be prepared to respec her (if you're on pc) or build her up with that in mind.

Alistair, I'm not sure, I didn't have him in the group on my 'despoil' run. He won't leave of course, but you could take a hit to your relationship. He is a 'good' character, but he doesn't like the chantry much at all.

The others should be fine.

Now I don't know about Wynne but aren't you given the option to lie to Lelliana about what you did to the ashes? I know if you tell her she leaves but you may have the option to lie.

I would be surprised if Alistair doesn't have heavy disapproval points for despoiling the urn. He has problems with the politics and life of the chantry, but he's still pretty religious.

I took Morrigan, Sten, and Zev with me. Sten was like "oh, a trash can", and none of them were particularly reverent or cared about the urn.
