I've played BG1, though I've never beaten it, but I haven't played BG2.

I have a general understanding of the mechanics and I'm thinking of playing a Mage in a good party.  However, I don't know if I should be a Mage, a Specialist Mage (not sure which school to pick), Fighter/Mage multi or Fighter-to-Mage/Mage-to-Fighter dual.

Here's the party I plan on using:

- Imoen
- Ajantis
- Yeslick
- Coran
- Kivan

Thanks for your help!

I'd play as female Bard (Blade) with that group setup.

It depends what your plans are. In that party I'd have Ajantis up-front, Yeslick supporting in melee and the other three using bows. Plus a gnome fighter/illusionist.

I'm actually thinking of doing that, except making my PC a pure Mage, but I'm not sure if I should be a regular Mage or a Conjurer -- this Specialist school seems like the best, except you can't learn Identify which may or may not be a big deal.

I'm thinking of going half-elf for roleplay reasons.

Since you are not using Xan or Dynaheir, I would stick to pure mage to balance your strong melee/ranged weapons party.

Since you haven't got a divine caster till late in the game, a cleric/illusionist is another option.
