Hi, I've just started ME1 and I'm loving it so far.
However I'm kind of confused/frustrated.
I researched every class before playing and starting the game and I felt like Vanguard was the perfect class for me and the definite class for Mass Effect and Shepard as a whole - I mean a Combat Soldier with Biotic powers; how better could this be for Shepard? The perfect match.
However I feel violated; I can't use the Assault Rifle properly! I'm untrained it.
I know you can train in the Rifle but how though? People have said you can but none of them have explained how.
What do you do to achieve this?
I really want the Assault Rifle so I can do Biotic abilites while shooting down enemies with the game's main weapon type like a bad-ass.
It just feels wrong only being able to handle secondary weapons like the Pistol and Shotgun(They're really good though mind you).
What do I have to do to get the Assault Rifle training?

Someone please explain it in detail please :)
Also how long would it be till I get it?

you need to get the AR achievement to be able to unlock it for new characters to pick as special bonus skill.

Ahhhh the memories of when achievements were actually achievements and not something slapped on for a single playthrough

Yeah Basically log 150 mob kills with the Assault rifle to get the achievement, basically make a soldier an run around killing everything till you logged the kills simples

1. Make a soldier.
2. Kill 150 enemies with Assault Rifles on the Soldier.
3. You will now obtain the Assault Rifle Trophy/Achivement.
4. Create a new Vanguard and you will be able to select a bonus talent, Select Assault Rifles.
5. You can now invest in Assault Rifle Training on Vanguard.

You sadly have to make a COMPLETELY NEW character to select bonus talents. If you really want Assault Rifle Vanguard then you might as well do the 150 kills as soldier now.

Why is there no other way to select bonus talents? What's the point of even having them if if you have to start all the way from the beginning to use them?!
Damn this!!!!
I've just became a Spectre, is it worth restarting? How long am I in?
Arghh damn this. I've done so much stuff and have to lose all of this.
Are you sure I can't just select it when I've got the achievement?
How do you even select a Bonus Talent anyways?

They are a replay award to encourage you to replay the game. Every class does perfectly fine without them.

You are at the very beginning still if you just became a spectre. You HAVE to make a completely new lvl1 character to select a bonus talent and then they are stuck with that even on new playthroughs. A shepard created without any bonus talents cannot get one even on a new game + playthrough.

Just watch this if you still don't understand.

Would you say it is worth it not getting the Bonus Talent then and just contuing like this?
I mean how long will it take to get 150 kills with a soldier?

Not too long if you really want that power. Note that it has to be Shepard logging those kills, party members do not count.

Also note that this same appiles to all bonus skills. You need to get the respective achievement before they become available in the bonus selection screen.

Edit: and as I recall, you don't have to be a soldier for this, just kill 150 enemies with AR. Of course, you still won't be able to add a bonus skill to an existing character.

Also note that you can just reload Eden Prime and run through it until you have 150 kills. The count is keeps accumulating over the course of multiple careers and reloads.

That said assault rifle is far from the best bonus for a vanguard.  It will do less damage than a master marksman pistol.

No reason to ditch that character if you don't want to. There's an acheivement for every weapon class and most biotic and tech talents. Why not use this Vanguard to get as many as you can with the talents and weapons he has now so they're available as bonus talents for future playthroughs? Alternatively if you are going to ditch it then my advice would be to start again as a Soldier and you should be able to get all the weapons achievements in one playthrough without too much trouble. You may have to occasionally order your teammates out of the way so you can score the kills but there are plenty of enemies to shoot. TBH I found it harder to get some of the tech acheivements. Took me a couple of Engineer playthroughs to get one and Engineers are really damn fragile to start with.
