DA2 WAS more than mages vs. templars. Sure, that was the primary focus.

we got a pretty strong dose of Qunari aggression
...And?
Not to mention hints from the Grey Wardens that Something Big is brewing
Never! <_<
Do you have an actual point to make, or do you just want to be snarky? My point was that DA2 was not just about mages vs. templars, and that point is correct. Secondary to the mage/templar conflict was the Qunari menace within Kirkwall, and the hints of more to come. Same with the other aforementioned plots.
Flemeth has been muttering somthing like that in DA1 and DA2. Speaking of which, why wasn't there any focus on her? She is afterall the presumed antagonist of this whole thing.
What about morgan for that matter? Where is she? What is she planning? What was the whole ponit of DA1!?
What is the point of this digression? The point of DA:O was to end the Blight before it destroyed Ferelden, and in the process of doing that, we dealt with civil war within Ferelden and the various conflicts facing other peoples within the realm. There was some focus on Flemeth. About as much focus as there was on her in Origins. Her overarching role in this series remains to be seen--she may not necessarily be the antagonist. But even that were true, it hardly means that we need to have any games, prior to her Big Reveal, to focus on her more than they already have. As for Morrigan (not Morgan), she's obviously being kept for a later game. Just because you didn't get all the answers you apparently wanted in DA2 doesn't mean that they're being discarded. But we were talking about the issue of DA2 having more to its story than just mages vs. templars--which it indisputably did--so I don't see why you suddenly brought up these unrelated bits.
various hints about something going down in Orlais which was heavily followed up on the bridge novel, Asunder
Who reads the books? From what I gather, it still is mostly Mage/Templar dispute. We're all still waiting for this "big change".
I personally don't perceive the books to be cannon.
Quite a lot of people read the books, actually. And yes, it still is MOSTLY mages/templars, but the fact remains that we were introduced to a civil war taking place in Orlais, so you can bet that that WILL be part of the background for the next installment.
It doesn't really matter whether you perceive the books as canon or not. (It's canon, by the way, not cannon). The two stories that came before are set prior to Origins, so they aren't nearly as important to the overall canon, but Asunder takes place immediately after DA2, so much of its plot WILL be relevant to the overall story. The specific details of a given game playthrough may differ canonically, but base details like an empire-wide civil war, you can bet that
that will be important to future settings of the DA series. I doubt it'll be necessary to read the books to grasp the story of DA3 (though it would certainly make for a greater appreciation thereof), but yes, certain world-state specifics created in Asunder will certainly be part of DA3. I've got no doubts about that whatsoever.
