Let me introduce myself first, my name is Chris and I have been gaming for close to 30 years which probably makes me a senior citizen here. I remember playing the Ultima series, Might and Magic, the Bard's Tale etc. Not to mention games in many other genres like Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Command and Conquer, etc. I could go on and on. I still own almost every game that I have ever purchased! I've played a lot of games obviously and I am usually as fickle as they come. I rarely ever finish a game before the next new shiny one steals me away.

DAO is as good a game as I have ever played. The fact that I may actually finish this one is a testament to the strength of the narrative and amazing gameplay that Bioware has created. I've been staying up waaay past my bedtime these last couple of weeks so I could keep playing. My girlfriend hates this game. That is perhaps the highest praise I can give ;)

What I like-

  • The story ( it is like taking part in an epic novel/movie)
  • Characters (I fell over laughing talking with Oghren in camp last night)
  • Voice acting
  • Setting (amazing world you have created Bioware, simply amazing)
  • Combat
  • Codex
  • Music (it is as good as any movie score in my opinion)
  • Graphics (I know I'm in the minority here)
What I would like to see improved in a sequel/expansion packs-

  • More character interaction (I want more quests that involve the characters and even more ways to explore my companions)
  • Improved side quests (this is the one area of the game that could use some major improvements in my opinion. I want some epic quests that have nothing to do with the main story.)
  • Random dungeons/places to explore (ties in with the side quest comment)
  • More "unique" magical items with backstory (I love the few that are in the game, but I want even more)
  • More monsters
  • More options in combat (combos, chains, and more skills/talents)
It's hard to "complain" about anything in this game, but I did give a few sincere suggestions as to what could be improved in my opinion.

Kudos to you Bioware. From someone who has played nearly every big title this ranks as one of my favorite games ever. An amazing job and well worth the money I spent. I look forward to the future DLC and expansion packs. KUTGW!

From an old POR player, l pretty much agree with your review.

As for what you want to see improved, hopefully some of that will come about in March's exspansion .

Hey Dargone. I'm another old-timer here (witness, my first Fantasy/RPG played was the legendary "Wizardry"... I'm that old.) Anyway, I fully agree with your assessment of Dragon Age: Origins. The strengths are so strong for me (namely, the story, and how much you come to actually care about the characters and the story) more than compensate for any shortcomings I could find.

It would be great to see where this goes with future installments, but the highest praise I could give to this game is it's the first time in well over a year that I've used my Xbox for anything other than Rock Band. It's sad to see so much negativity on this forum, but that's no different than anywhere else on today's internet. I add my kudos to Bioware and wait with baited breath to see what the studio produces next!

There are a few out there on Nexus (not in the same category of "other campaigns").

There's one where you fight against a few Templars and one of Flemeth's "other daughters" (this one made little sense to me but I got it just to kill 5 extra minutes of my life) and receive a mage set.

And then there's the Enigma Dungeon one which adds two companions and has three levels with mostly boss type monsters and a bunch of modded items.  The companions are buggy but it's still worth playing.  No replay value though since the maker didn't want to update it and didn't put respawn on the mod.

The DLC is nice, but my OP was about the core game. Having said that, even with the DLC included (which I do use) I still want more involved side quests and some random dungeons.

Ahh, the Wizardry series. Those were pretty good games as well. The last one that was made several years ago was very good if I remember corectly...

Yes I agree. Really, as you say, the story and the characters (including the world setting, the voice acting etc) really push this title over into the top rank of alltime best rp experiences for me. I can quibble about combat and so on (I really am a fan ultimately of the more tactical, rulesy BG-era combat sigh); but nothing can take from how powerful and effective the storytelling was. Yay. Just totally yay.

Okay? Maybe likes/dislikes would be a better title? Also, if we are going to play the semantics game than it's defintiely more than a couple of bullet points!

P.S. Title changed just for you!

I wish more posts were like yours - well constructed and well thought out. I think I pretty much agree on each point listed!

Different weapon classes can be tacked onto that list. I want my spears, halberds and the like.

I would like to see a little further departure from 'Bioware formula'. Several games now (Jade Empire, KotOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age) follow a predictable Introduction -> choice of tasks to complete that are individually linear -> converge at conclusion events kinda deal. While it allows an amount of scope for choice in progression, it would be nice if the pattern were not a foregone conclusion. Perhaps not all of the 'middle' tasks should be required, some could be mutually exclusive, and you could have multiple exclusive conclusion paths based on previous choices.

I realise that a game with this scope becomes onerous in terms of content, dialog, voice acting and development time, but the immediately recongnisable formula was the biggest detriment to this game in my opinion - in fact the only thing i can reasonably fault.
