I started DAA, and noticed that a "new character" was created in the bioware folder. It was charactername1, whereas my DAO was charactername. (charactername = whatever you select for your character's name in the game.)

Is it safe to assume that the original charactername has not been modified, and if I want to play additonal DLCs, or DA2, then I should select DAA character for import (is there that choice?), as it would have the most up to date stats/decisions?

OR

Does the play in DAA and DLCs actually modifiy the DAO character, and I should select that?

Or

something else?

Yes, for each consecutive DLC's you import your character into, a new folder will be created named as 'characternameX'. Your origins save doesn't get modified. You get the option to choose the particular save from whatever module you want to import from, except that you can't go back from GoA or Witch Hunt to awakening.
