Witcher 2's combat is infinitely more fun but hopefully you'll enjoy the first one anyway.

I have about 1800 hours on Civ V so i think i am addicted.

Amalur has great combat and exploration but not much of a story.

I can see you started TW1 so wise decision as i think it is better than TW2.
If you have not played the game before you have some big surprises coming up.

Keep posting your comments, we want to know what you think.
TW1 is probably my favourite RPG and i love Geralt’s voice and expressions but i will give it a rest for a few years.

Was able to get past the fight. Just clunky with the game telling me "Nope, you're going to go deathblow that stunned creature right now while Abigail fights (and dies) to 4 others" :@:@:@

Well, I remember the Beast fight as 1 of the 2 very challenging fights in TW1 (when playing for the first time). Must have realoded more then 10 times on the Beast. The other was a certain... plant.
But except for these two fights, as you progress and improve your attack chains and other skills, the game gradually becomes easier. Eventually you mainly just watch the acrobatics during fights. And try to break records in how many enemies you fell with one swing of the Group style.

Anyway, I do remember being able to make a lucky killing blow on the Beast... perhaps some lag or poor reponsiveness?

Okay, I guess I should really try The Witcher as well soon. It's lying around somewhere here for ages. But there's so much stuff to play, and so little time...

I did that so many freaking times.

I still don't quite know how I won it.

It is very simple, if you upgrade the aard sign and use it on the beast you can kill it in about 3 seconds.

Sure, if someone tells you about that about ten ingame hours in advance. Or that potion that's like +40 or 80% with the silver sword.

But you never know these things on your first playthrough.

TW1 combat system was not that bad, it's an old game and for it's time was okay. Just like how BG combat is bit silly to me now but at the time was good enough. I kind of view the TW1 combat more as rhythm than QTE, get the right rhythm and it makes for fun fast combos. I prefer TW2 combat to it though a lot.

I was reloading on the Beast fight only because I thought Abigail really died and I kept trying to save her. She doesn't, she just gets knocked out.

I never thought I liked TW1 combat, until I played TW2 and missed it. Geralt is more fluid and more fun to watch. For me combat is boring anyway so the aesthetics are what matters most. I can't understand how people can actually like combat where you scurry or roll around like a chipmunk on crack.

The beast fight is a poorly designed boss encounter. The other ones in the game are better. I don't like that it takes place right after a lengthy interactive cut scene. If I remember right:

-don't bother trying to save Abigail, she goes down no matter what, but she doesn't die.

-circle the perimeter, and take care of the lesser demons first.

-then go after the main one, and use Aard.

Anyway, TW2 combat is much better imo. I know there's a dearth of counter and dodge mechanics - to me the system feels undercooked - but it actually has a solid melee system and alchemy has greater impact on gameplay.

For the most part I just used the group attack. Fortunately I had knockdown. I wasn't able to get my sign to actually knock The Beast down, unfortunately. That did work with the cockatrice though.

I quite liked that sigfreid or sigmond whatever name is down when hunting cockatrice. He was less bigoted than most of the order he is part of.

By the way how are you playing your Geralt, pro-human, pro-non human or neutral? Mine was neutral as I cosidered both sides to have jerks but didn't think was fair to blame entire species of each for actions of few within them.

The Beast is a very tough fight. Too tough for that point in the game, IMO, and probably the toughest boss fight you'll encounter when compared to your character's abilities/level.

Interestingly, The Witcher 2 has a very similar situation with the Kayran, which is a pretty tough fight for the point in the game at which you encounter it. Unfortunately, most of the difficulty is due to trying to time the bloody QTE in that one.

Anyway, once you get through the Beast fight, the game gets much better, as noted by Lathrim.

If you're itching for The Witcher then my suggestion is to just jump in with The Witcher 2. Some may say it's blasphemy to skip the story of the first, but they do a decent job of catching you up and I found the the second game was more enjoyable than the first.

*nevermind* It looks like you already started first Witcher.

I haven't really picked any sides. I stopped the thugs from beating up on a dwarf, but also stopped some Squirrels from taking Haren's goods.

Although had I known what I known about Haren, I may have chosen differently. Though I did need his help to find the Salamandra, so I probably would have protected them regardless.

Even though I screwed myself over with ghoul's blood (and not getting it), I actually like that the game requires me to have learned about the monster in order to harvest them.

Another game I played recently (that's actually a lot like TW, in that it's a pseudo-RPG with action combat) with the same idea is Gothic. It's pretty cool.

Yeah, the lore books were my main expense in TW1! Partially because there wasn't that much else to buy, but still.
Researching your enemies and their weaknesses prior to engaging them greatly added to the atmosphere... and felt like the very thing a witcher would be doing.
Shme that this was mostly axed in TW2. Though I suppose it makes sense that you're more knowledgeable after you have fought many mosters and started remembering some memories from your past life.

Not if you start helping the Scoia'tael, then he starts sounding very bigoted in a hurry.

TW2 does both. Fight monsters to gain knowledge, or buy the books as a shortcut to gain knowledge. On harder difficulties the books are the way to go. If anything I hope they take this idea further in TW3.

I found the Specter sword oil useful in the fight with the Beast. Blizzard potions can also turn a tough battle easy.

Alchemy really matter a lot on that game, creating potions makes big difference to outcome of fights.
