I'm still early in Chapter 2. To me the Squirrels are a bunch of militant nonhumans that kill and do bad things because they feel oppressed.

Well, they are oppressed- pretty brutally.

I couldn't side with the Order because I just couldn't see Geralt joining a bunch of religious zealots in tin cans.  Also paladin types make me itch (they aren't really paladins though).

I agree that the neutral path is probably the most "Geralt" choice.  TW2 makes the choice even tougher in some ways, in others less so because it can be a more personal choice than philosophical- loyalty to a friend vs. loyalty to your word.  But now we're getting way ahead of ourselves.

TW2 forces you to take a side so there is no neutrality which is a big shame in my opinion.

Will be interested in hearing your opinion of the antagonist once you finish the game Alan :)

If by "neutrality" you mean the principle of political neutrality, Roche's path is still more or less neutral if you choose to play it that way.

Ask the innkeeper about Coleman, he´ll tell you where to go. If you let the elves in Chapter 1 have the goods, don´t visit the detective until you´ve finished with Coleman´s quests.

The elves are dead, but I have spoken with the detective, so I am not necessarily blocked on it. Worst case, he's skipped town as far as Geralt is concerned and I can't complete it.

Ask the innkeeper, then go to the harbor after dusk.

You are more or less right about the Squirrels. They have a point, but have gone way too far. Their leader was quite a SOB in the books too.

I agree, I felt like adhered more to my neutraility through choices offered in Roches path. I did feel I managed to remain neutral in Ioveths too but the choices given made it harder not because of emotion but because of mechanics (which choices were offered to the player). I felt Ioveth was the Kai Leng of TW2 in so much as I disliked him as much. But he had by far the much better act 2 than Roche's (imho) mainly due to the location, quests and characters meet including Saskia. I played TW1 as neutral and imported into TW2 that way, I felt managed to keep neutral in TW2 aswell by the end.

I don't mind actively discussing and sharing my experience, and I know it's an older game and agree on principle with the statute of limitations on spoilers, but I will likely move into The Witcher 2 after this.

If you'd like we can turn this into a more Witcher specific thread (since it's catching the eye of Witcher fans in general), but then I'll probably have to take my leave of the thread.

Regardless, I'll likely alter the thread title just to make it clear what the thread has evolved to (whichever way it goes).

I see no neutrality in either side and that is not what Geralt stands for as far as i can see but that is the only way we are able to play the game.

I don't think you need to change the title, I will keep TW2 things out of discussion my end from this point on.

I'm enjoying hearing a new person's perspective of the game.

(If you leave, carry a watermelon to the end, for Firky.)

(PS. I just had a minor panic that me saying there were no watermelons in TW2 was a spoiler.)

Haha fair. I'll just update the title.

It's not at all the end of the world, but I have been posting in more of a "what am I thinking as I am playing" so it's a bit of a stream of consciousness.

It can be hard to not let future information potentially sway my decisions and ideally on the "first playthrough" I prefer it that way.

Though I concede on some level I forfeit that by not playing it sooner ;)

Cheers.

I met some big giant creatures that drop vampire teeth haha.  One was chilling in the garden near the hospital!

It's quite good how many monster types are in that game. They did well on that aspect.

I often imagine how gruesome Geralts hands must be, the amount of organs and body parts he takes from corpses off creatures killed and harvested parts for his alchemy. He must have pretty grubby finger nails. Surprised any of the women in the game let him touch them. :)

There is a Witcher discussion thread don't change it! I'm enjoying reading your playthrough. It's always fun to hear of someone experiencing this series.

Have you been exploring Vizima at night btw? You can run into some quests that you wouldn't otherwise.

In general I found Chapter 1 pleasant. Nothing particularly egregious, although by the same token nothing spectacular either.

As I recall of The Witcher, if you've made it through Act 1 and into Vizima and you're still into it, you're set. I always thought Act 1 was a drag. Maybe one of the later swamp sections got a tad boring but generally, the game only gets better from Vizima on.

Reading this thread is kind of making me want to go back and play The Witcher. Such a satisfying ending and setup for The Witcher 2.

That NPC woman selling gifts for women in the game is a rip off merchant (imho). Since when did downer brain tissue, beast liver and dragon secretions become bad replacements for roses, silk scarfs and candies... It used to be the thought that counts now it's "I am not telling you anything unless buy me jewelry or silk scarfs!".

I have been yes. I need to do so to complete some quests. I can't recall if I found anything new, however. Though there's a ton of things that classify as quests!

I am finding it tough to understand why Witchers are not trusted, since all I did was go around and slay monsters that tormented people, presumably for less money than the Royal Huntsmen types do.

Witchers take children to put them through the Trial of Grasses, and if you survive you're a mutated freak with superhuman speed and endurance.  So people are afraid of that power, when they're not depending on it for help.

There's also the element that they are frequently seen as outsiders and rarely seen as well, since they are dying out. Hell, in the books Geralt basically looks like an albino with cat eyes - they've prettied him up in the games. His appearance alone is going to prompt xenophobia in people.

There's a bug that makes it crash (for me it was in Act 3). I forgot the fix however, haven't played it in a long time.
