Hello All,

A week ago I started working on a Human Commoner origin mod and started brainstorming ideas. After a week's worth of chatting and voting, I've narrowed the possible directions for this mod down to three. Each one has its own pros and cons, but I think all of them are doable. Since I'll be spending the next few weeks compiling the dialogues for Duncan and other characters through Ostagar (to see what I have to work with for VOs), I figured I'd get one more round of voting in before making my final decision about which of these options to choose as the setting/situation for the mod.

So without further ado... here are the three options:

1) Denerim City Guard: In this origin, you would play a good/corrupt city guard dealing with local criminals/nobles/etc. You are the guard that nabs Daveth, which is how you first meet Duncan. While carrying out your duties, you stumble upon something [probably one of Arl Howe’s schemes] that gets you in way over your head. You are eventually framed and captured, but Duncan steps in before your execution and conscripts you into the Grey Wardens.

Denerim Guard Intro:
You were born in Denerim, the largest city and capital of Ferelden. It is a place rife with political intrigue and beset by crime. As one of the city guards, your task is to protect the people of Denerim from thieves and killers. Unfortunately, the crime lords and noble families in the city do not make it easy for you or your comrades. Each day brings you a new set of problems and today is likely to be no different.

2) Blight Refugee: In this origin, you are a human commoner (occupation still to be determined, possibly Chasind), forced to flee your village before [or after] the darkspawn attack. On the way to Lothering, your caravan is attacked by darkspawn and one or more of your loved ones [your spouse, child, father/mother, etc.] are killed and/or dragged off. You hunt down the darkspawn, kill them, and save one or more of your family members. Duncan arrives on the scene, is impressed with your prowess, and recruits you into the Wardens.

Blight Refugee Intro:
You have lived your entire life in a freehold near Lake Calenhad. It is a quiet and tightly-knit community, but rumors of a new Blight and recent darkspawn attacks in the surrounding area have convinced your father to seek refuge with your uncle within the city walls of Denerim. You have many preparations to make before your family departs tomorrow morning and leaves behind the only home you’ve ever known.

3) Militia Man (Replaced Parent of the Mage): you are recruited into the army [along with your brother] to march on Ostagar; combat training followed by meeting Ducan [who is impressed by your abilities, perhaps mentioning that your father/mother/grandparent was once a warden]; ambushed by darkspawn on your way to Ostagar, your brother dies; after surviving the attack you are recruited by Duncan) [Thanks to Maximus741000 for the idea]

Militia Intro:
You have lived your entire life in a quiet freehold near Lake Calenhad. However, when king Cailan sent out the call, your arl began enlisting men and women for his army. Your father, who once served in battle against the Orlesians, has sent you and your brother to do your duty and protect your country. He has taught you everything you know about how to fight. But will it be enough to survive the battles ahead...

Please vote for the setting/situation's that appeal to you. Yes, that means if you like more than one you can vote for them all. However, if you do this, I would like you to rank them in order of interest so that I know which ones people are most intrigued by.

If you have any questions, comments, etc., then please feel free to post them here or to PM me.

Thanks,
Joseph

PS: The Origin intros use words spoken by Duncan during the game. Hopefully, I'll find someone who can splice his dialogues together and make them work. If you know anyone that could do this (including yourself), it'd be greatly appreciated.

I really like the City Guard the most. Followed by the Blight Refugee and then the Parent of the Mage. I haven't really bonded with the Mage Origin as much as I thought I would.

I like the city Guard one the most. The Blight Refugee has too much going on. It would be better if you were Chasind I think. The Parent of a mage is just eh.

I agree ...with city guard as #1....but the blight refugee as a chasind is very intriguing and would be #2

yeah city guard is the best of three, i like the idea of meeting daveth again :D i like blight refugee because it will make the PC a warden for another reason than framed crime/personal disaster like in other origins.

While I like the idea of meeting Daveth again, as Inzhuna said, I think I like the 'Bligh Refugee' the most, both because of the potential emotional involvement (the caravan attack) and the ties into the main storyline (someone recruiting merchenaries to kill the general... Loghain? :D)

Hello All,

I'm not certain Duncan ever mentions "Chasind" in his dialogues and so that might be difficult to pull off (at least with a direct reference). One of the things I'm trying to do is make sure that I can splice together the origin intro and Duncan's dialogue from already existing dialogues. This is why the refugee origin would probably be from the Lake Calenhad area (because Duncan mentions Lake Calenhad in the Mage intro) and not Lothering (a place I not mentioned by Duncan).

But thanks for the suggestion ;)

PS: Keep up the voting... I'll be transcribing Duncan's dialogues for the next few days and don't expect to make a decision until after I see what I have to work with.

I think when Duncan says "were they wilder folk" he is meaning chasined.

But out of those three with the development I would probably say City Guard. I intially liked parent of a mage, but it just seems like to much to cram in.

Fantasypieces,
Do you remember where Duncan says that? It might be useful if I end up making the refugee Chasind. ;)
Thanks,
Joseph

In Ostagar when you return with the blood and the documents. It pops up when you say "perhaps we should tell you about Morrigan and her mother."

Alistair says something to the fact of "strange people"
Duncan says "Were they wilder folk"
Alistair syas "No, I don't think so... they could be apostates, mages hiding from the chantry"
Duncan says "I know you were once a Templar Alistair, but chantry business is not ours"

Hope that helps :wizard:

I have to join the majority. I think City Guard really sounds best. Especially the Daveth part about how you first meet Ducan strikes my as a very good idea!

I'd have to go with.... City Guard.

And regarding the Chasind, that may be interesting. A few ideas went through my head at one point about making a companion or two from them, although I'm not so great at modding and not sure we can make those yet.... companions, that is.

I vote city guard as well, it will be easier to mod as well since the city is already extensive and has a market place so u wouldn't have to build something new just add to it.

City Guard is the best, perhaps the scheme could be the Tevinter slavers in Denerim.

Edit: After reading the two new origins proposed I still feel that the Denerim guard one is the best, playing as one of those nameless guards that seem to just fall on my sword would be an interesting experience.

Edit(2): Still likeing the Denerim guard.

Incidentally, when we first realized that the Human Commoner origin we had simply wasn't going to work, the solution we came to (but simply didn't have the time to implement) was that the missing origin needed to be the equivalent of a human variant of the Dwarven Commoner origin. Meaning that the player would have been from the streets of Denerim or even an outlaw (by choice or circumstance) out in the country... and would have been conscripted in a manner similar to Daveth, to save their skin from the law (and certainly an outlaw could also explain an apostate, come to think of it).

Naturally you have your own ideas; I'm just throwing that out there. Image IPB

...that would have been really, really cool. Too bad you didn't have the time to implement it. That's how I usually end up RP'ing my city elves anyway - it's very open to being some sort of criminal without it being an organized/ controlled criminal like the dwarf commoner.

For me, it's the Blight Refugee. Without question. The emotional impact would deep. I really like the human noble origin for this reason. Saying goodbye to your parents, seeing your brother's family butchered...it was tough. I'm a sucker for deep stuff like that, though. :)
