Will we see any ethnic minority representation in companion characters in DA3?

Given that there Bioware has been bending over backwards to accomodate one type of social minority in their games it would be nice ot see a little more ethnic diversity. I understand that Thedas is loosely baded on on medival Europe but that doesn't really justify the utter lack of ethnic diversity in the characters we've seen so far. Some have suggested that isabella is a non white character but based on what she looked like in dragon age origins we just have to assume she's had a major tanning job since then. When you've got a game where there is magic and dragons and  "herosexuality" abound i don't think adding a few non white characters to the equation wold be a big deal even if they tend to be less popular the rare occasions it happens.  (looks at  Jacob Taylor and Kasumi Goto)

Yes, Isabela's skin tone is no doubt the result of a heavy tan. She's the Snooki of Dragon Age. <_<

(Sigh) This smacks strongly of a troll thread.

WTF? Someone asking for minority representation makes it a troll thread?

Yea the OP is rediculous but his beliefs are reasonable.

Isabela did have darker skin in Origins, it's just that the lighting in that building and the lighting of the game in general were awful and made her look like a white woman with red hair. She was made darker in DA2, but not really by much.

The old engine struggled with darker skin tones. One of the devs said anything darker than Isabella ended up looking blotchy or something like that.

No ethnic diversity? Humans (Fereldens, Antivans, Rivaini), Elves, Dwarves, Qunari, Darkspawn.....

How many more possible races could you want?

Isabella only appeared to be pale skinned in origins due to the lighting

I agree with the premise of the thread though, there are presumably people of varying skin tone through out thedas, there is no reason that this shouldn't be represented in our party or the supporting cast of characters, if we can have sundry bizarre entities, including magical golems Qunari and abominations which would be far outside the normal experience of ordinary people, we should also be able see people who's melanin and facial morphology differ from the mean

In before ahistorical stuff regarding the lack of non white people in Europe, as if it were defined solely by the experience of medieval northern europeans

Didn't this same thread )with a slightly different topic title) JUST get locked.

That's a rhetorical question. That's exactly what happened.

If the OP is not a troll s/he is begging for the ban.

Because he sounds less like he wants to make a point and more like he wants to start an argument.

Can I save everyone some time? Here are the four main points that will be said over and over in this thread:

1) Yes, there should be more ethnicities in Dragon Age because ethnicities need more representation in popular culture and some people like their character to reflect their skin colour.

2) Skin colour is not an issue in a fantasy setting because we already have elves, dwarves and qunari.

3) There are already a number of ethnicities in Dragon Age already, and trying to insert more will be changing the setting and that's bad.

4) something something historical fact that's not particularly relevant in the context of a fantasy setting something something

These will be repeated ad infinitum, along with many veiled accusations of racism (along with some actual racism), until the thread is ultimately locked and we're back where we started. And the only person really satisfied out of the whole deal is the OP, who is just trolling in the first place.

bend over backwards to accomadate to a social minority? Wow, what a great way to start a thread...

Anyway... there are mercs and mages and traveling this go around, more chances for diverse characters. Whatever works for the story.

This thread seems to be pretty spiteful. Bending over backwards for social minority? Seriously?

The modding community disagrees.

Although it turns out you do have to edit the spec maps in order to fix the blotchiness. So it's not so much their engine as their texture artists. And certainly the lighting in many parts of the game does no favors to a sufficiently dark Hawke, which may in fact be a genuine engine limitation (sufficiently dark armor goes flat and hard to see too).

But anyway yes if you look at DA:O Isabela's headmorph in the toolset it does use the second-darkest skintone. Ferelden's darkest skintone has simply always been pretty white. Or... there's that bizarre red-purple one. I'm pretty sure it was an accident that that was ever used for human NPCs, though.

This thread is rather senseless. First and foremost because there are no "Ethnic Minorities" in Thedas. It's not Earth, i.e. the real world. There is no Black, Hispanic, Asian, or Caucasian. There's Rivaini, Fereldan, Antivan, Orlesian, Tevinter, and so forth. And we've seen representations of all those races in both games. If you want Minorities? That's the Elves, as they intended.

So comparing the Ethnic argument with same sex or straight characters is myopic and rather Trollish. Honestly I hate myself for even indulging this thread, but I really just don't want to see this thread pop up 30 times every other week after each time the thread dies (as it should...)

Yes there is no Europe, Asia, or Africa but certain characters can clearly be distinguished by their appearences . Allaistar is clearly a white guy. As Leliana is clearly a white woman, as is Morrigan etc....

He's mad about the qqqqqqqqqs.

Anyway, there is a black man in the game. When you go to the fight the crazy elf over the gaatlok, the guard that tries to stop you looks quite dark to me (as dark as DA is capable of, at least).

if you're talking about the guy i think you are he definitely wasn't black. lol! Wasn't even that dark. I think it had more to do with the lighting.

If you'd forget skin color for a moment you'd realize that elves fill the role of minority in the DA universe.

There are many characters with dark(ish) skin.  But they look like white people slathered in fake tanner, except, perhaps, for Duncan, who actually looks like he came by that skin tone naturally.

Compared to the rest of the characters, he was dark. It isn't just the lighting, because none of the other characters, including the NPCs standing next to him when it's over, are nearly as dark as he is.

That is true, many of them have white facial features and a dark(er) skintone. Isabela is also dark. I definitely would like to see more variety. Wilmod has a yellowish skintone.

Kinda cute, too. Too bad about the abomination thing, though.

Well...at least this incarnation of the thread didn't come off as homophobic as the OP's other thread, so maybe it will stay open... Although the bending over backwards phrase still makes me think you're pretty homophobic -- would they be "bending over backwards" for black people if they made black characters?

Plus, they've already explained that the lack of non-white chracters was due to engine limitations. Switching to Frostbite will fix this so there should be plenty more racial diversity in DA3.
