I'm about a third of the way into ME1 (thanks again Bioware for the PS3 version) but becomming somewhat frustrated in not being able to get into hardened locks and  such. I'm level 30 now and would hate to restart all over again.
Is there any option to reset my levels ala the science console in ME2 or the medbay bed in ME3?Image IPB

Sadly you cannot reset talent points in ME1. Not even through new game +.

As the others have said already this isn't possible in ME1. PC users can cheat and add extra talent points via the console but sadly that's no help to you. The other bad news is that at level 30 you're only 5 levels away from getting just 1 point each time you level up instead of 2 points.

But it's not all bad news. Many of the containers you can't get into at the moment you can always return to later when you've levelled up some more and have thrown a few more points at the talents needed to get you into them. If I remember right 9 points in each of Decryption and Electronics is enough to get you into all the containers in the game, and of course you can make one squadmate into your Electronics specialist and another into the Decryption specialist if that suits how your build has gone so far. As long as they're in the team you can get into the locks, even if you're a Soldier Shepard who has to go down to the planet with Wrex and Ash, kill everything in sight, and then go back to the ship to return with, say, Tali and Kaiden.

You don't say how many points you've got invested where and with who but in your position I'd be thinking of looking at the team and seeing who is closest to 9 points in Decryption and Electronics, and spend points accordingly while you're still getting 2 points every time you level up. Since that's ten points between where you're at and when it drops to 1point/level at level 36 you could actually get two people with 0 up to the required skill level to unlock hard objects. If you've already got team members on six or seven you could do it in a level or two and then get into all those crates that are locked for you now. Just don't do what I did on one playthrough and forget what my two specialists were specialists in and ended up with two Decryption experts and nobody for Electronics - doh.

Do you have to have Decryption and Electronics on your Shepard to avoid the mini game?

How can you avoid the unlocking mini game?

You can always take Tali, Garrus, or Kaidan with you if you've leveled up their decryption and electronics.  The only way to avoid the minigame is to use omnigel.  That still won't allow you to bypass the 9 points in decryption or electronics on a character in the party.  It doesn't have to be Shepard except for a couple of specific instances on Virmire.

Thanks. I didn't realize it but whe I went to do Wrex's personal quest, i should have brought Tali. Her decryption was almost maxxed out ( I took Wrex and Liara who couldn't decrypt a Bazooka Joe puzzle ) Now all those hardened locks are showing easy decryption.
So today's lesson buys and girls is take Tali an all missions. Not counting being terminally cute, she can crack any coded lock wearing boxing gloves Image IPB

Just as a note you can return to most of the places on the side missions with her in your party.  It's mostly main story line places you can't go back to.

Good to know. Got a lot of backtracking to do. Before tackling Feros and Virmire, i've been doing a lot of the small assignment quests. Nice I can go back and collect all that loot.

Simple warning on revists:  If you plan to revisit, or realize you don't have a party member with the required skills, DON'T click on locked stuff.  Clicking on stuff and getting the "you don't have X skill" message is just like failing the mini-game and, when you return with a techy, you must do omni-gel... won't even get the option to try the mini-game and maybe (doubtful, I know), save yourself some gel.  I know, I know, the mini-game is hard as hell but, besides time there is noth lost from trying and you just might get lucky.

It's just another one of the annoying things about ME1, I had the same problem on my first play through.

True but when you think about it the cost of omnigel is incredibly cheap. Everything converts to 4 units of omnigel whether it's a rare set of Colossus armour or those weapon/ammo modification that you get in such numbers they start to clog up your inventory, and alll the low rank stuff sells for such silly little amounts and you get so much of it, including all the basic gear that you start out with, that you might as well convert it to omnigel as soon as you're sure you won't need it ever again. I tend not to bother selling anything rank IV or below and gellifying it all instead, and once I'm sure I'm okay for money and have decent (not necessarily the best but just good enough) gear for all my squad I'll even gel loot of much higher ranks. With all the loot you get automatically from killing enemies I tend to run out of locked boxes before I run out of gel, especially when I'm often gelling some or all of what I find in some crates as well.

Was merely a simple warning, mostly for people on thier first playthrough and likely still short on gel.  The early parts where gel is more precious than credits or experience, like Eden Prime, early Citadel, or the first few explorable planets.  You never know if you might get lucky and beat the mini-game.  Clicking way even that small chance because of lack of skill can be irritating.  I know I've done it.

I fully agree with converting nearly everything into gel, especially the early gear that can't turn a profit.  Got to get to that point first, though.  :D
