From what I've seen, Dragon Age essentially puts your character and party members into one of the following:
Weapon and Shield Tank Warrior
Damage Dealing Two Hand Warrior
Melee/DPS Rogue
Archery Rogue
Healing Mage
Saboteur/Crowd Control Mage
AoE Damage Mage
Given that, wouldn't each weapon style or focus potentially do much better with 'class kits' ala Baldur's Gate 2? Or, for a better idea, instead of specializations that never seem to be recognized by NPCs, I think they'd actually fit into being class kits much better, each with advantages and disadvantages. Of course, you would have the vanilla classes of warrior, rogue and mage, without specializations but with the added advantage of being able to build them the way you prefer.
In fact, many of the specializations seem to be inspired from BG class kits already:
Templar- Wizard Slayer
Berserker- Berserker
Reaver- Blackguard
Assassin- Assassin
Duelist- Swashbuckler
Ranger- Beastmaster
Bard- Skald
That said, the bonuses would flavor your PC early on, giving him/her an advantage/disadvantage as opposed to unlocking it at a certain level and magically gaining those powers even if there's no story explanation or quest that has your character learn these abilities. Starting your character off implies you historically trained yourself in a certain weapon style or ability and gets better with levels rather than just an awesome button to press when the hordes come.
Thoughts?
