Third story down.

All of these news stories are canon, all of them were made by bioware.

I never get the hate too. It seems people playing Colonist/Survivor has a very unpleasant back story involving Batarians and that's probably why.

ME3 had a great side conversation between a human and a batarian on the citadel.

They don't have tricks though.

How can you hate a trickless race?

The same reason "Modern" FPS are all about killing brown people. They are an established "bad guy", so its acceptable to dehumanize them.

Really? Most FPS (read: the overwhelming majority) have multinethnic antagonists. The Covenant from Halo, Cordis Die and the mercenaries in Black Ops, Russians in Battlefield, among others. If it isn't usually a relatively ethnically diverse faction of enemies, then it's more than likely going to be aliens.

The batarians aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. They're certainly better than the krogan and the geth.

I don't hate them, just the fact that there are too few of them to kill in-game.

It's not racism, but a matter of taste and aesthetic. The galaxy would be much more beautiful without them.

Eh, maybe. But think of this.

Who do you have now to make yourself look even prettier?

Exactly, you want them to give you that edge baby!

I like Batarians.. and Vorcha.
Mostly because Mass effect try so hard to make me hate them and to make them look like the bad guys.
Sure they might be a bit cruel with all the slavering and torture going on, and their government could tone down on the whole evil communist dictator politics but the majority seem to keep to themselves and mind their own business
Unlike the mass genocidal egotistical douche bag council races whom everyday seem to find new exciting ways to screw up the galaxy .

Baterians are cool, they are just portrayed to be the jerks of the galaxy (I think mainly because of the Hegemony). But, yeah I'm totally fine with Batarians.

My Colonist Shepard...not so much.

Dunno, the Vortchas could make it as well...

It is the meat mustache.

It cannot be tolerated. Posted Image

I have to look at it as a story that starts at ME1. You have a background as a character, the Batarians are not good guys, as a generalization. You have a direct experience of that.

Whether you allow that to shape your view of them or realize there are exceptions is one of the important choices you make. Which totally don't matter by the end of ME3. But right up until that point, they do.

Never felt anything ill towards them. In fact I warmed up to them a bit in ME3; poor devils lost their entire civilization while the rest of the galaxy pretended not to hear.

Because they're ugly and that one DLC in ME1 "Sky is Falling" or something like that made me hate them with a passion. >_< ..and they do slavery.

Literally every Batarian I've met is a criminal, or trying or threatening to kill me, or all of that, so they don't give the best general impression.

The only one who possibly didn't fit into that category I helped to survive the Omega plague, so I don't hate them.

Except when I'm playing a ruthless colonist, then all Batarians must die.

I don't know if someone said this already, but probably because:
My name is Shepard Montoya.
You killed my father.
Prepare to die.

But in all seriousness, I'm open towards the batarians. My Shepard was a colonist, but I sort of like to think one batarian didn't feel right about the raid and helped Shepard escape, thus making Shepard not a racist towards batarians.
But still, for example in ME3, when Balak confronts Shepard and Shepard lets him go, I thought: 'aww, poor guy, lost his people and all.'
But Shepard said: I want you to shoot him, but let him go...
I was sorta shocked. I wouldn't of reacted like that and that was one of the moments where I thought they should've given us more dialogue selection.
I didn't play any ME DLC, so I don't really know their history together, but still...
