It's less of "I hate Batarians" and more of "Batarians are designed to be hated."

They are loaded to the brim with traits that western society doesn't like. They have slaves, terrorists, an oppressive caste system that lacks social mobility, a totalitarian government, and a general lack of positive feelings toward us. Not to mention the sheer lack of positive Batarian characters, the few of note being terrorists, mercenaries, slavers, antagonistic or simply neutral. There's the Colonist background where they killed your parents, the Ruthless background where you massacre them, Bring Down the Sky, the Mad Prophet, the random batarians that hassle you when you try to enter Omega, Cathka, the Blue Suns organizer in Garrus's recruitment mission and the Batarian terrorist that you get to kill in ME3.

We aren't supposed to like Batarians.

Very good post. And I agree.

It makes me wonder how many will think outside of what we've been conditioned to think about them.

Personally I've kept an open mind, but that's probably my rl principles on racism showing.

But in all seriousness, I'm open towards the batarians. My Shepard was a colonist, but I sort of like to think one batarian didn't feel right about the raid and helped Shepard escape, thus making Shepard not a racist towards batarians.
But still, for example in ME3, when Balak confronts Shepard and Shepard lets him go, I thought: 'aww, poor guy, lost his people and all.'
But Shepard said: I want you to shoot him, but let him go...
I was sorta shocked. I wouldn't of reacted like that and that was one of the moments where I thought they should've given us more dialogue selection.
I didn't play any ME DLC, so I don't really know their history together, but still...

My Shep was a full-paragon with a Ruthless background. She actually felt very guilty for basically slaughtering masses of them, so tries to cut them slack when she can. The Batarian plague-victim who lights into her? Doesn't bother her at all, she just gives him some medi-gel, then makes sure Mordin fixes him up.

Now the jerk who tried to drop an asteroid on Terra Nova? Screw that guy. Regardless of his species.

I don't hate Batarians.
In fact, I think Bray is cool. Completely friendzoned by Aria but, cool none-the-less...

Yeah, see, I didn't play any ME DLC, so I didn't know that...
I don't know what the game than 'thinks' you did, but I guess it happened, as oposed to Balack never trying to destroy Terra Nova... (if you don't play the DLC)

But, just imagine it's some random batarian, wouldn't you feel pity?

I love the batarians, just look at my pic, but screw balak. The man's an unrepentant scumbag unless you turn him in, and is not leader material in my opinion.

Bray on the otherhand I like a lot. Also narl, he's cool to.

So basically human beings right? Blue suns was started and run by a human and they use slavery all the time. Terra firma and cerberus have both been responsible for acts of terrorism across the galaxy. And murders exist in all species, espically humans.

Absolutely....what happened to the Batarians was a tragedy of epic proportions. Balak is a Terrorist, but he is also just one Batarian, he doesn't represent them all. I don't dislike Batarains, am basically quite neutral about them and would certainly feel devasted for them losing their home world, waht a horrible way to go.

Pretty much what you said in your OP: slavery. In ME1 in Bring Down The Sky, when the Batarian says, there is no reason to kill him, he never wanted any of this, he was just on a quick slave run, I let Shepard say: that's reason enough for me - and kill him. Plus, as a colonial Shepard, seeing what they did to her family and the quest in ME1, where the former slavegirl tried to kill herself, I think my Shepard is quite entitled to hate Batarians. As for me, I see myself as an enlightened central european for whom human rights fom the basis of his ethical system and I as a person can't stand them either.
