I started with the human Noble story.  All of the names, places, and fancy titles!  Arling, Teryn, Amaranthine, Blight, etc. etc. etc.

I have to admit the huge load of lore being thrown at me all at once gave me the initial impression that

"damn, I'm never going to know what is going on."

The game's narrative did do a decent job of explaining things well enough though but reading some of the codex was essential for me.

Having followed this game lazily for the first two years and then sucking up every bit of lore like a sponge, it wasn't that intimidating.
