Not at all. I quite like the games, but in my opinion they are not RPGs; they are enjoyable sci-fi shooters with a bit more writing and dialogue than most. The first game had some light RPG elements but that's it.

The definition of the genre is too broad I'm afraid. I think splitting awards/categories into two (RPG and action-RPG) would make things much clearer. Games that heavily utilize manual skills (aiming, clicking-rate etc) would go to action-RPG category, while those that depend almost exclusively on stats and thus intelligence & strategy to win instead of manual aiming/clicking skills would go to core RPG category.

That's the way I see it as well, though I am still hesitant to say even Mass Effect 1 is an action RPG, it's just too simple. I really don't mean to sound like an elitist snob (and apologize if I do) but the game mechanics just don't fit the bill for what I think is even an action RPG.

To me, a RPG is something where almost no input from the player him/herself affects the combat. So for me, a RPG more or less has to be turn-based (although there are borderline cases like the RTWP, which is in realtime but everything is still defined by turns and rounds).

Oops, sorry for derailing the thread.

Yeah, best we keep this discussion in separate thread, it could go on forever ;)

It is without shame that I admit that Mass Effect 3 is my favorite game of all time, for the following reasons:

Great graphics and art direction
Incredible dialogue, story, and voice acting
Reaper noises (BBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM)
Multiplayer that's far more awesome than it had any right to be
Great soundtrack
Gears of War-rivalling shooter gameplay
The best balance between story and character emphasis of the series

Definitely best game this year.

To be fair though, this year was imo pretty disappointing.

I agree with this for the most part. The only part that I don't agree with is 'Gears of War-rivalling shooter gameplay'. As I don't like what I've played of Gears of War, I would have to say that I much prefer ME3's shooter gameplay.

Totally deserved, Hulick's score was the best thing about ME3 - and that doesn't diminish the rest of the game, it's just Hulick's score was phenomenal.

The music is gorgeous. I added the (free!) Leviathan track between track 11, "The Cerberus Plot" and track 12, "The Scientists." It's a great addition to my listening experience.

The Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick tracks slay me. One of my favorite scores of all time. In ME3, the music is virtually a character in the game, its presence is felt so strongly throughout.

I've had plenty of fun in ME3, but the honest truth is that I don't think it deserves the game of the year. It does have a great soundtrack though.

Gaming journalism is iffy. Just to use an example, Black Ops 2 is 10 times the game Modern Warfare 3 was, but it has a lower Metacritic score and unlike MW3, had hardly any end of the year nominations. Now, I'm not a huge fan of COD, but I feel kinda bad for Treyarch, since they were pretty daring and innovative in BO2 but was scoffed at due to the crap that is MW3.

I've held off reading this thread due to the angry villagers here on the board who hate everything about ME3 because it doesn't measure up to how "their" version of ME3 should have been written.  Could ME3 have been a better game, certainly. There were things I wished could have been improved on but the completed product and DLCs have been much played and appreciated.
Congrats Bioware on the MANY awards recieved. The haters will hate and sound like the far right whiners who can't believe they lost two presidential elections. The only thing I found better than ME3 was finally being able to play ALL the games on PS3 and enjoy them all over again and see how different the Shepard saga is seeing all the things I missed.

I really don't get the need to hate on each other for having different viewpoints. If you liked the game, fine. If you didn't, fine. Express why you did or did not in a civil manner and just don't let yourself be baited. Me personally? Well the amount of bad quotes from BioWare senior developers has been somewhat mind boggling (ABC endings, wildly diverging content which never happened and so forth), and I'd have liked to see them actually acknowledging that they themselves had a hand in causing the blowback upon release, when the game simply did not contain those elements they had promised would be there for people with ME1 and ME2 import saves. But I digress - hopefully they've learned something and now that the combat system is finally nailed down they can focus on better editing and internal consistency for future titles.
