Ran through each origin. (Both for the achievement and to see/enjoy)
City Elf (female) has been my favorite. Followed by Human and Dwarf Noble (both female again, but there's less of an 'impact' of chosen gender in those cases). Mage and Dalish (male) were enjoyable, but felt to be 'lacking something'. Dwarf Commoner was played through once and have not yet felt a need to run another through.
What's the best origin story?

I see you said you'd play through them all except Dalish. My only response is that you might as well, it's easily the shortest out of all of them, and you may just like it. I didn't find it bad at all, like others are saying -- but it isn't really "OMG, did *that* really just happen?!" like a few of them are.

Eh, keep in mind that there's more to the Origins than their intro story. They all pay extra dividends later on, some more so than others. To me, the Human Noble just makes for a slightly more PC-driven story overall.
Good call on the Dalish though. It's the one Origin story that felt flat to me. City Elf has a little more intrigue.

I think that you should still try the dalish elf origin, personally it is my favorites. It's a bit less dramatic than the other origins but it makes up for that with an event that happens later in the game.

Dwarf Noble probably the best. Human noble the most overrated. City elf and Mage is alright. Dalish elf gets a lot of flack, but I don't think it's that bad
Dwarf Noble was also my favorite. I got a kick out of interacting with everyone through my second for the beginning of the game.

I hated the mage origin. City Elf is my fav tbh and theres a nice link to it towards the end of the game, though they all have links to other parts of the game this was my fav (havent played dwarf yet mind you). It was also my first so maybe I'm biased, the human one was just as good but I don't really like being just another normal dude, I prefered the idea of being lookd down on so I can be spiteful

Mage was somehow very boring. The fade part was very predictable IMO, the rest rather annoying crawling. Only thing that I liked was the nice meetings with Duncan. Its not as rushed as in other origins. You get the chance to talk to him a little more than elsewhere. I stopped playing once I finished the origin.
Human noble was great. I was surprised how much it stroke me emotionally at the end. Only thing I didn't like is that as soon as you talk to your brother the game gets going and you don't get the chance to talk to anyone else. The first time I played as was expecting to have more time to explore after talking to him and instead I missed half the origin. The impact to the whole game is pretty good, too.
Dwarf noble was fun. Gorim is a great character and the story is really good. I am looking forward to see how it works out once I return to Ozammar.
Dalish wasn't spectacular, but it had a nice touch while you were in camp. It somehow felt like leaving home in the end. I just finished the origin and probably will keep playing it till the end.
City elf was good. I played it with an female elf. The impact on the overall story isn't big, but at the end of the game its also nice, not great but solid. The beginning is really good.
Dwarf Common is still to be played by me.

I love my Dwarf commoner. There is something about making a name for myself from having no name that appealed to me.
Reading this post I am enjoying the fact that there is no clear best origin story, and that people just seem to have favorites according to their personality. Tells me they were all pretty decent stories

I just wish there was a way to make a mage without doing the Circle mage origin again. Love mages but pretty bored with that origin. For favorites, both noble types are great.

Here's my personal ranking:
Most Favorite: Human Noble
Liked: Dwarf Noble and Commoner
Disliked: Mage
Seriously Disliked: City Elf and Dalish Elf
But there is no "best". There's what's best to you, and that's all that really matters, right?

Dwarf. Anything dwarf. Pretty much the best part of the game can be summed up with the word: Dwarf. I can't even imagine how much better the game would have been if dwarven culture had been allowed to penetrate the circle of dress wearers as well. Best origins. Best branch of the storyline. Best fights. Best atmosphere. Best everything. About the only thing they don't get my "best" vote for is physical attractiveness, but oh well.
If there's one thing DA:O did well, it was dwarves. I've never been a cult follower of dwarves in my three decades of fantasy escapism until I met the dwarves of DA:O.
If they came out with a DA sidestory that was mainly these dwarves, left out the emo, weak elves, and threw in a token good looking human female, it'd be a blockbuster I tell you.
As for the weakest origin, tree-hugger elf was really....really.....really weak. Three reallys don't do it justice actually, so pretend I had a few more in there.
