If you had to choose 1 ME2 character to be on the squad in ME3.

Probably Grunt. I forget why he said he couldn't join you, but if I recall, it was a rather lame reason.
There was no reason. He was recovering in a hospital (via Datapad iOS app), then disappeared afterward. No word or anything.
I assumed Grunt was helping out on Palaven and running the new Arlakh Company. He is a war asset after all.
No Aralakh Company in my games.

How exactly is Miranda a bimbo? I mean, aside for the fact that she isn't.

I think it's really funny how people judge Miranda based on her character model and the Director of Photography's choice of where to place the camera. Her character, judged on her personality, attitude, morality, and disposition combined with her central placement in the drama of ME2 and Cerberus makes her easily one of the most interesting characters in the whole game, whether you like her or not. (and I obviously like her).
Too bad ME3 doesn't do her justice. It's incomprehensible how she was sidelined. The amount of wasted potential boggles the mind.
I must say, I found Miranda grating and uppity when she first appeared, but I came to really like her as the story continued and you got to see that she's actually got a lot more depth than she chooses to display outwardly. I applaud whoever wrote her character, they did an excellent job because not only did they implement believable characterisation, but they even wrote those uninviting aspects of her so well that it wasn't that I didn't like her as a character, I didn't like her as a person, and that's how you know someone has written a character well: they go beyond being a rendered image on a screen and actually affect you, the player like you were genuinely interacting with them.
That being said, I still miss Jack way more.

Miranda is my choice to appear by long, long shot, but I like Jack's character, so you wouldn't hear me complaining if they brought her in more somehow.
That said, I still have high hopes that Miranda makes it in as a major character in some aspect of the DLC plan.

Objectively, Miranda. She was so damn hard to kill in ME2, and she should've been instrumental in combating Cerberus throughout ME3. Much better than, "OMG, my sister again!"
She's not even my favorite character but there is NO. DAMN. REASON. she wasn't on the crew in ME3.
I also love Grunt.

I've come to notice this quite often. Even people who aren't complete fans of Miranda seem to agree that she feels out of place not being on the squad.

Yep. It's jarring.
I do like Miranda a lot. I just prefer Jack and Grunt as far as ME2 characters go.
But there really needed to be ONE character from ME2 on the squad in the thrid game. And when you consider how hard it was to kill Miranda off, coupled with the Cerberus aspect of the story - I just don't know what the hell BioWare was thinking.
I think about all the ways the Cerberus arc could've been made more interesting through Miranda and it just feels like a total missed opportunity.
And I'll always wish I could've taken both Miranda and Jack to the Cerberus base at the end of ME3.
