im wondering why i thought i preferred dragon age over oblivion now.
removing all my favourite companions that i and im sure others got attached too, has pretty much killed this game for me, il see how the next expansion goes but the loss of the old companions is enough to make me want to trade the game in right now
i cant even be bothered to play it now because everything is essentially for nothing

when I took time slowly savoring every moment of the first playthrough.. so much it took a month to get through - I loved nearly every minute.
The Fort Drakon rescue had to be high point, it was just so much fun. Atleast we still have this.
It did more for me than play a spiritual "second" game to Baldurs gate.. it was better.

man, oghren was my least favorite party member. maybe bioware felt they needed to go deeper into his character?
Shale was my least favorite. Not because I didn't enjoy the dialogue, etc. I did, it was good fun. Least favorite because that whole scenario was a little over the top, a little too unbelievable/comedic compared to the other characters. It didn't quite fit for me. I also though Shale was over-powered.
But yeah, I get what you're saying. I think it's Oghren because there was no romance, and he had no compelling reason to leave.

You can't have Leliana, some people took her to Haven, defiled the ashes, and killed her.
Lots of people killed Loghain.
And Wynne.
And Alistair left for others when they took on Loghain.
And so on, etcetera.
Oghren is the only one I can think of that everyone got (not a DLC companion) and who no-one drove away or killed.
I'm pretty sure the new companions will be equally interesting and compelling. As long as they don't have my old companions listed as having died, mysteriously vanished with no knowledge of what happened to them (Mask of the Betrayer anyone), or something like that, I'll be happy. They're off doing their own thing for a while? I'm cool with that.

I think everyone is freaking out over nothing, just because it mentions one favorite is returning (my money is on a certain shape shifter I only pretended to kill LOL) it doesn't necessarily mean that that is the ONLY old favorite returning.

Ok lets first understand that Awakening is an expansion to the game.
Now lets find this 'old favorite'
If we use common sense, it can't be any of the party members (your character not included) Because lets say it is Alistair who is the favorite, what if you where one of the people who chose Alistair to die at the dragon? How will you explain having him appear in an expansion pack alive? Same goes for all characters, if you make some certain choice in the game, some either leaves your party or die. So I would very much like to see BioWare explain how that is possible, since the Awakening is suppose to be right after the Blight has ended. Even if they come up with the "Here your character has never existed, this is another story" then why call it an expansion pack if it does not follow the first game? It would more be suitable if they said it was a 'side game'.
Old favorite could simply mean your character or it is a former none-playable character.
I must say I suspect Alistair to be the old favorite, but again, I would like to see BioWare explain how he can turn up if he died in the first game.
I hope that you will be able to play your old character (if it did not die at the dragon, else I say be the new warden character then) and of course have those character with you that didn't leave or die. And perhaps some new friends to meet?
For all I can see, making an expansion pack with a character in it, who in the first game had a risk that he/she would either leave or die. Into the expansion pack would be "Not right" let me put it that way, plus that wouldn't make any sense at all.
So I would say, it is a none playable character. But then new problem, what favorite none playable character is there? Jowan can die in the first game, Connor too, Isolde, Flemeth, and some other people. So who is left? Arl Eamon? Yeah right I would like seeing BioWare put an old man to be part of your party, same goes with First Enchanter. I don't even have a favorite none-playable character (my opinion tho) so I can't see who it is going to be.
All in all I can't seem to find any sense to the expansion pack at this current time, the only reasonable explanation I have is that it take after in what you choose in the first game, aka who died, who left. And then the expansion will take it from there.
Actually the only character I haven't heard could leave or die, is the Dog
So perhaps it is him? Who knows? Surely not me.

*casts Dispel Hope*
While I'm sure it would be thrilling, having multiple companions that we would need to write up in their entirety only to allow you to have ONE of them would be a massive waste of resources. Considering that the budget for an expansion is already pretty small, it's not really feasible.
Sorry, just wearing my Expectations Management cap at the moment.
This was not an awnser to the original question, just a awnser to "will the old favorite be choosen by the player". With David Gaiders usual habit of being cryptic, there is still the possibility that the OP is talking about is correct. That some of the older charachters will return aswell as the new NPCS and the old favorite that was not a playable NPC in Origins (come on, we all know it must be Bann Teagan...
Unless David comes back with a Improved Dispel Hope, im holding on to this thin straw ...

* Import your character from Dragon Age: Origins or start a new as a Grey Warden from the neighboring land of Orlais
See that is what I am talking about, so you do get your character to be part of it.
* Encounter five all-new party members and an old favorite from Dragon Age: Origins
That would be Alistair, I haven't seen so many post/fan clubs about any other character before
Well better then nothing, tho I was hoping you could have your lover with you (if you had one in the first game) as a playable character.

Also, it says you can encounter up to 5 new party members, not that you must take these 5 people with you. In DAO we encountered 9 just for the main quest, and each origin had a specific party member or two so you could have said "you can encounter up to 16 exciting party members during your travels" but only 8 of them would have been relevant through most of the game.
It is way to early to be having these fits of soul-searching angst over you love being taken from you in the expansion. Odds are that your choice will have mattered, and the people who said they were going to stick with you will be with you (if you are alive and not a sodding Orleasian now!! LOL) and that group of 2-4 people will be with you, you will encounter these 5 others and be able to add them (or slay them on the road-side, whatever) as you see fit.
That's my take. I'm not too worried at all. They've already honored the most important choice by bringing in your GW if they lived, or letting them stay dead and have a new GW to play. I'm sure after doing that they aren't going to FUBAR things too much.

I read that, and all it says to me is to do all that work and only allow one choice would be a waste, NOT that you only had one choice. I don't think he confirmed or denied anything other than the premise of working out that many choices to only limit you to one is wasteful.

You got a good point there tho, my only problem is that stupid statement saying "Only one old favorite will be in the expansion" which makes me start thinking that the the one I romanced with, won't be at my side spite he promises, else the rest wouldn't matter so much (not to me anyways) Ok he also needs to know that we are in a romance and the expansion doesn't reset our relationship. But other then that, lol.

As for *wishfull thinking*... i'll go for Isabella 2.

Since all the companions could have been killed or driven away, it's probably an npc. I wouldn't think Morrigan was likely (possible but not likely, after all, she's pregnant now for many people, amongst other problems). It doesn't matter that Alistair is in the clip - if you killed him or your pc, I suspect you'll automatically get Anora in the first case and the Orlesian Grey Warden in the second.
So, if it's an npc, who is it? Who knows. Your wild stab in the dark is as good as mine. Mother Mallol, Teaghan, Cullen, Greagoir, Bann Alfstanna, Ser Gilmore, sheesh it could even be that cute Templar in the Chantry at Lothering, what was his name?

Okay, I know that this will probably get buried somewhere in this massive thread, but there is a really good article at IGN dealing with new information. The article is from today, and is an interview with Fernando Melo the Online Producer.

.".....-- there is one party member that returns that can join your party and continue on. I think we're trying to keep that under wraps until a little bit closer to launch though."
So you will have the option to add one of the party members from Origins.

It can't be that, because he doesn't necessarily meet and marry her! If you give the sword back, you hear about Bevin instead.
