One thing has always made me wonder about the Darkspawn.

They search and search for an Old God, and when they find it it tells them to basically travel to the surface and attack everything?  Why would that be the sole motive for an Old God... You would think that something as Ancient as itself would have a better plan then that.

I know that the Darkspawn corrupt it, but they also are following its call in the first place.  I think we are giving the Darkspawn race more clout and reasoning then they deserve.

This is obviously just my take on it.  Please, I would love to hear what other have to say on the subject :-).

My own theory is that the Old Gods are trapped in some way and cannot free themselves. Becoming an Archdemon allows them to escape their bonds. It could even be why Dumat convinced the Magisters to enter the Golden City in the first place.

I don't think it really changes the darkspawn's attributes, but rather, gives the horde a focus and goal that makes more strategic sense than milling about in the darkness of the Deep Roads. If you play the Legacy DLC of DA2, you get the impression the original darkspawn (the Magisters themselves) seek the Light intensely. Perhaps the Archdemon gives the horde the unity needed to break onto the surface. There is lore in game referring to darkspawn on the surface when no Blight, but they are weak, disorganized, and outnumbered. Perhaps the Archdemon is the catalyst that makes the goal of attaining the Light possible.

My Theory:
It seems the Old Gods are kind of doomed to die one by one. That may be the reason why the maker imprisoned them underground to begin with. The Old Gods called out to the tevinter magister lords to sin against the Maker and in turn becoming free in the process by overthrowing the Maker. Little did anybody knew that these foolish magisters would become darkspawns. So well, at that point faith in the Old Gods vaporized and everybody started worshipping the maker. Now, who would the Old Gods call onto next in dreams to free them? Obviously, the people would give them the finger.
Probably it seemed to the Old Gods that the darkspawns are thier last resort for freedom. So, they kept calling the magister-turned-darkspawns, and later on, the freshly brooded darkspawns. What the Old Gods didn't know that these fiends would actually corrupt them, making them mindless, making them forget their original motive to become free and instead lead them to the surface for the petty purpose of causing a blight. It is actually funny how the darkspawn don't vote for a leader among themselves to lead them to the surface.
The term 'Old God' seems kind of like a misnomer, if we are to believe they are not actually as powerful as the Maker itself. The relation between the Maker and the 'False(Old!) Gods' is not really clear.

I think the dragon gods are just a very ancient and very powerful version of the current dragon. And maybe they hibernate for a very long time? Much like the high dragon sort of hibernates between feeding frenzies. And it could be that the taint can connect to the power in their blood allowing darkspawn and any tainted people to hear their calling. The calling itself is just when a powerful being is tainted it "beats" like a heart and all bearing the taint can feel it. And as for why they want to destroy the world.. Maybe they realize they r monster and r pissed at the world or they see that everyone stopped worshiping them

i'd like to know whether the thing with the immortality is because of the darkspawn
or an attribute of the old gods...
might be why one... or the maker? might have imprisoned them
perhaps because they were immortal and he had no idea how to kill them

I guess it is not really clear if the old gods were immortal from the beginning of creation. It is even not clear if the maker created them. And then we don't even know if the maker really exists. We only have the Chantry's word for it.
The chantry teaches that the Maker imprisoned the old gods for turning away humanity from their true creator. But again, it's the chantry's claim. May be it's true or may be as MR_PN mentioned above, the old gods or dragons (if they are not really gods as people feared and worshipped) are simply just some species that are hibernating for an extended period.
