I must confess: I like Dragon Age II. I always have. Was I disappointed when I first played it? In ways, sure. My first playthrough took me longer than expected (stretched out in fits and burst over the course of a year and change). It was different, that's for sure.

Now that I'm playing it for the second time, I'm not going to lie, the recycled environments are hard to ignore, but now I just chuckle in response to "that damn cave again". Button Awesome continues to suck, although less so now that I'm not playing a two-handed weapon warrior. Only the two-handed warrior had the infamous attack I have dubbed The Flying Bumbah Attack.

... but  some of the animations, at least for the mage and the rogue, don't entirely suck. Some are *gasp* actually cool, even if they end up being overused and adding a less than realistic look to the combat- a problem DA:O didn't have for all it's alleged tedium.

The story and dialogue and characters are all great now that my focus is on them rather than on the look and feel of the game. My initial shock is long gone and I have come to realize that in spite of its flaws it boasts what every BioWare game can: a great plot, memorable characters, great humour, compelling drama, strong use of its themes, and zexy Love Interests (lesbian, bisexual, gay, or boring old hetero).
The LIs, of course, are of primary importance.

(Kidding... sort of)

In short I love DA II. It's no masterpiece but in my mind it's a flawed but underrated RPG gem. I look forward to transferring my Origins save files over and playing it through many more times!

P.S. But then again I also like the endings to Mass Effect 3 (post-Extended Cut, I must emphasize) so what do I know?

People give DA2 a lot of flack, sure it wasn't as great as origins but it wasn't the worst game ever made either. I actually quite enjoy the fast paced combat. I'm re-playing through origins and while the story is awesome the combat is dare I say a bit boring. I love the character interactions and art style of DA2.

I do hope they keep the combat from DA2 in DA3 with the story and inventory from origins and I think they will have a killer game.

Just my 2 cents.

I actually thought it was worse on the second playthrough. I had below zero expectations after listening to negative feedback for literally MONTHS, so when I finally got around to playing I kept thinking, "This is surprisingly good for how little time they had to work on it."

After the initial shock wore off, I kept noticing all the things I disliked. By the second "playthrough" (okay, I made a new Hawke a few hours in because the first one did not match my vision. I.e. I imagined a soft, feminine, girly-girl mage and the required masculine, deep-voiced tomboy the game saddles you with just hurt) I just thought it was terrible.

I also hated my character since I WANTED to be a city elf and/or an elf sympathizer. The game beats the fact that you're a human from a rich family into your skull after taking away the choice to be anything else. It just made it impossible to like the game. I hated the Hawke family, I hated the Amell family, I hated every dialogue wheel Hawke personality, and I hated the way Hawke reacted to elven characters. I felt so viscerally upset that I ran back to DA:O and drowned myself in the elf and dwarf origins for days. The more "non-human," the better. I just keep hating DA2 more every month.

I actually enjoyed DA2 as well, though I consider it flawed. The characters and most of the story made me happy.

But I cannot for the life of me finish my 2nd playthrough. I keep coming back to it, finish a quest, and then quit. I wish I knew why, but I don't.

I couldn't finish my second PT, either, though I got to Act 3. My third Hawke had a problem like Faerunner's did - I couldn't make the voice work with the country farm girl in my head.

But then I found out how to change character appearances. Playing the game as Anders was actually very engaging, even though I don't actually like Anders very much. It wasn't a seamless 'Origin' in the style of DAO, but it was interesting enough to hold my attention the whole way through, and the parallels between Anders and Merrill were much more vivid. It helps greatly that purple!Hawke, sprinkled with occasional red!Hawke, is a very close fit for Anders's tone and dialogue.

I'm trying the experiment again with Aveline, because she had the character arc I had been hoping would be the protagonist's. This "origin" isn't working out as well; Aveline's tone doesn't map well to either blue or red, really, so Hawke's dialogue rarely seems 'in character.'

I've played it three and one half times (all three classes, romanced Fenris, Merrill, Isabella and Anders). I enjoyed the first time the most and my enjoyment diminished with each subsequent playing.

DA:O was like freshly baked bread. I almost never tire of fresh baked bread. DA2 was more like flan (a/k/a creme caramel ou flan de leche). I like flan, but I never ask for a second serving.

Hi mousestalker. No Archer? My inner bowman is disappointed! Archery is really a seperate class if you ask me.

I got a new PC since my first playthrough. Better graphics combined with an understanding that rivalry was not the same as disapproval made the game a lot better. Still suffered in pretty unforgivable ways caused by obvious lack of time and/or funding.
