I'm not particularly thrilled with how damage types have worked in the DA games thus far. Well, one, because they really only affect mages except in DA2 where you have wonky weapons that do non-physical damage.
Anyway, here's my proposal: don't attach the damage type directly to the weapon. Instead, give classes modal abilities that let them, say, add X poison damage for rogues or "all staff damage is electrical damage" for mages. Potions and runes can do this, too. Or you can have runes that, instead of adding fire or poison or lightning damage, they add x% damage instead--so they're really only doing something when you have a given mode activated.
You could even combine this with my idea for charging up abilities in this other thread so that if you want to charge up an electrical attack, you have to activate electric damage mode.
I think this would allow for a lot more specialization/customization across the classes, but also let people just use their favorite weapon without having to fuss over what damage type it deals. So not only is it customization, it's also more ad-hoc customization that you can either fiddle with at a crafting station or change on the fly with potions and mode switches.

I feel the damage works fine as it is.
I do support the idea of mages being able to change their weapons damage type.

I don't know. Flaming swords are cool, but I'm not sure how you could justify them being a power of the warrior rather than of the item.

Yes, for staves that would be interesting. Maybe have a bunch of default talents that let you switch elements and upgraded versions that let your whole party damage with that element

The only problem with the damage types is there arent enough in the DA series
They need to add more

Then don't give those kinds of powers to warriors. Mages get elemental weapons, otherwise, leave the warriors with physical damage. It'll distinguish the classes more anyway.
