-Jowan for Dragon Age 3!-

Not to mention, he convinces his best friend and the woman he supposedly loves to break his phylactery so he can escape with her. Did he even once concern himself about the fate of his friend (or lover) if they're caught helping a blood mage (which he IS) escape the Circle? He was only thinking of himself. He's only thinking of himself when he gets into the trouble in Redcliffe. The first time he actually thinks of helping someone else is when he's cleaning up the mess he caused, showing a remarkable amount of character growth for one so self involved.
Now, I blame in equal parts Loghain and Isolde for the tragedy in Redcliffe, Jowan got caught up in it, but he's no innocent bystander.
He's greasy, slimy, unattractive in a 'I don't believe in bathing' kind of way, and his voice actor played him as whiny, needy and annoying. Like the unpopular kid in school who wants desperately to fit into the 'cool' bunch--the Warden--but lacks any of the appropriate skill or social abilities required. Since I usually have the Arl send him back to the Circle (to address his crimes there as well), he's most likely tranquil or dead in any given import of mine.
So, if those who spared him want to see him, I got no problem with that, but no cameo of Zombie Jowan for me, please.

No. His character is over. Make new ones.
This, except applied also to every other character in the series, apart for those who were actually set up as having a role in the upcoming events (ex. Flemeth). And apply it also to the Mass Effect series.
Sometimes I understand why George R.R. Martin likes to kill his protagonists so much in ASOIAF. It must be cathartic when fans can't ask "Bring character XYZ back!" - and if they do, you actually kill another one to retaliate.
I enjoyed Jowan in DAO. But he doesn't need to come back.
Almost nobody does.
Finding implausible ways to bring former protagonists back rarely does them a good service, and often ruins them.

I suppose you never actually see him die in those cases so it could happen (unless, again you kill him yourself) but it would be a bit of a cop out (again) if he just shows up and says "HEY! Yeah I was sentenced to death but... well.. yeah I used some blood magic to get out... again so... great. Here I am. Let's go."

Unless you kill him yourself (not sure if he actually dies since I've never tried that), he's always sentenced to death by arl Eamon or sent to the circle, where he'll be executed.

Yes, you can kill him yourself before going up to resolve things with Connor, (I think this option may be mage-specific) or afterward, before being sent to get the ashes in Haven, can ask Teagan if you can be allowed to do it yourself. In both cases, you murderknife him through the bars. Alternately you can ask Teagan if you can be his executioner, and then go ask him why he took up blood magic in the first place (again a mage-specific option, I think). And don't have to kill him at all, you can ask, go talk to him and change your mind yet again to allow Eamon to decide his fate.

I actually would prefer an all new crew for the new PC. Thedas begins to seem really small if every game is a hodgepodge of a bunch of returning characters. Some would make sense in cameos (Zevran continues to be on the run from the Crows, Leliana serves the Divine, Nathaniel may be a Grey Warden, Cullen is a templar, who can't be dead in either Origins or DA2). Others would make less sense --I for one don't want any parts of a VA'ed returning Warden. People need to let that one go for pity's sake, and I have no desire to see Hawke again as a companion. I couldn't care less if I ever saw Morrigan again either.
Have them or not, either option isn't a deal breaker for me, I'd just prefer we start fresh if we are going to start with a new PC. After all, the new PC won't know Morrigan, Jowan or Cullen anyway, so they'd start over as complete strangers.

I agree, I want to see the only bloodmage who didn't turn evil make a comeback.
Before reading this post I couldn't of cared less about Jowan but after the DA2 debacle with tons of "evil" bloodmages it would be nice to at least see or read what happened to Jowan.
Seeing Jowan as a tranquil with Lily somehow reinstated as a sister in the same circle tower would be delightfully cruel seeing the events of the mage tower origin in DA:O.

Err.... I couldn't find the option to free him in any of my playthroughs. The best I could do for him was turn him into the Circle instead of execution.
You have to choose the "Run. I never want to see you again" line when you're talking to him in the castle dungeon.

Oh, that's it? I read he returned anyway. I always thought it was something you did when talking to Eamon.
He doesn't, you get an additional quest if you're playing on the pc.

Well technically, if you returned Jowan to the Circle then you freed him in a roundabout way.
Because, you know, the Circles have been dissolved.
But there's the possibility of becoming a tranquil.

That is true. Hopefully you can cure him in the third game if that's the case. Otherwise, I guess I'd have to replay the first two games.
