Contrary to popular belief, there are more things to consider than speed and damage. Bows can shoot like twice as far the typical mage spell. Everyone can use bows, and even an untrained bow user can use them better than the darkspawn archers So you can basically kill a mage or two before the battle really begins. Mages bosses and mini bosses use a hell of a lot of area of effect attacks, and they can hit really hard. But, they only focus on whoever is nearest and it's much easier to heal and protect one character from the hard hitting dragons, undead and blood mage packs than it is four. So basically I see a lot of ignorance in this thread from people with little in depth understanding of how tactics work.

Uh speed and damage are everything when it comes to weapons in DAO

Or it could be these people just use Morrigan or Wynne for ranged dps and aoes.

Same goes for people who thought that archers were useless.

Not useless, just sub-standard.

In Origins Mages, Dual Wields, Two Handers and even Tanks could put out more damage than Archers and they could also sustain it for longer. Doesn't make Archery bad, not even the worst thing in the game (that's Shapeshifter), but it does make it less viable. /Opinions.

People just dont understand how to spend point or gear archers in DAO.
They are VERY powerful if done correct, crit-build, auto-attack + scattershot.
Had around 50% crit chance quite early last time I played, at the end of origins it was around 90ish, at the end of awakening I had 104%. Didn't even do an optimal build.

Don't use any other special attacks then scattershot, they are terrible and the time spent on fire one of them is better spent on just auto attacking.

I thought archers were incredibly underpowered in DAO myself...

Partly why they buffed them so much in Awakening to absolute OP levels lol.

We had this friendly archery shooting once. Completely amateurish. So this friend of mine, she shoots, the arrow bounces from frozen ground, crashes through the two car windows and ends up stuck in a stone wall. It bounced from the ground how could it still be so powerful!

That day I finally understood what a powerful weapon that is.

So killing someone in one go, I guess that's pretty normal. Even Legolas already proved that one. The things that a skilled archer can do..

Please stop. You're advocating switching out your melee DPS for auto attacking with bows on Flemeth. The game isn't that difficult.

Yeah I think this is true. In DAO using a bow at first was slow but when I got used to it I could get like 290 damage in a hit and easily kill bosses.

"One doesn't simply take an arrow to the chest...."

Bows are under-powered in almost all games.

Well how do you translate that into game when you have health bars and HP, stamina and what not?

Honestly just number crunching it where bows and crossbows (which you better add back guys) can be powerful enough to do damage in their own way.  Heck maybe this is an idea, a tree for archers where you do trick shots for crowd control, and another that is pure ranged DPS/glass cannon stuff.

I usually start RPGs with an archer character to calibrate to the game system, and I gave up in DA:O early on and went with a DW warrior instead because it wasn't very fun. I probably quit too early, but it felt like mobs rushed too quickly for the bow to be useful without speed upgrades.

I went with DW rogue for DA:2 to play it safe, and I was pleasantly surprised at Varric's usefulness and kept him around most of the time. There was a good mix of interrupt abilities that were good for picking out the spellcaster from the pack (especially when Wave 2 or Wave 3 materialized across the battlefield). My one issue was that he was too slow with Miasmic Flask (compared to my rogue) for it to be useful.
