I am making another playthrough of DA:O now, and even if i like it's combat, there is still that sense that melee weapons are heavy and unwieldy. And with Haste spell or with swift salve characters start swinging their meapons in proper speed. Good thing in DA:O combat it's animation, i mean character do those long complete swing with their weapons and that looks awesome, realistic. Another thing even if there is some chance of blocking, it happens rarely, so basicaly you are trading blows with your enemy.

In DA2 however combat speed is way too fast, and animation of your combat movements is twitchy and... i have that feeling that it's breaks off in the middle of it's animation. Most retarded in all this is Rogue two weapons fighting animation. When i first saw it in a demo i immediately thought about Los del Rio Macarena dance. Daaaaaamn it's ugly.

I saw in first person how people fighting with replica swords, i held one in the hand Castillon sword replica to be exact. Combat is fast paced, and weapon is not that heavy.

And when i was fighting all the way up to Tower of Ishal, i start to think about KotOR and it's melee combat. As you may recall that when you are fighting in melee with blades or saber you block, dodge, clinch with your weapons, and at the end of animation there is clash resolution. Either you damaged your opponent or you receive damage.

And i think it's looks cool, realistic, it keeps you engaged as a spectator.

If some one already brought this up , i am sorry. But perspective yet another horrible combat as it was in DA2 scares me a bit.

While I agree that DA2's animations were... not very good, I didn't really like DA:O's either. They were too slow and left the characters far too exposed. Those long, complete swings you talk about might've looked relatively okay when one just considers the physics, but when you think about the fact that there are people trying to kill you you wouldn't leave your body that exposed for so long.

You don't love that corpses explode for no apparent reason?

guys i am talking about combat animation of KotOR, even if it wasn't perfect, it's still is better than in DA:O and DA2. It just require some polishing. Because in DA:O if you swing a two-handed weapon, all your enemy is need to do is to push in the chest and you will fall on your ass. It takes too long to perform a swing even if it looks awesome.

DA2... pffff, well let just say it was not... good.

Combat is not blows trading like in DA:O or jumpy bs of DA2, combat is a blocks, clinches, dodges all that was made by Bioware in KotOR games.

On a side note:
I think people should start using the word 'Immersion' instead of 'Realism' when it comes to games.

On topic:
Having animations more similar to DA: O would help a lot with immersing yourself in the game world. Seeing your character having to use his entire body to swing a giant sword is 100 times more engaging than any summersaults and flashy moves.
I like to be able to see what's going on and admire the animations.

Alleluiah!! Spot on.

If they want to improve melee combat all they need to do is add a bit more of a powerful feel to the blows, and give warriors AOE strikes like we got in DA:A.

The total butchery which happened to combat for DA:2 was not only awful, it was unnecessary.

hmm...
my examples of how i feel about combat in DA:O and DA2 have only one purpose to guide you to the main topic's idea.

Which is follows. Star Wars universe rotates around lightsaber fighting(well at least lightsaber have not the last role in sw universe). And Bioware created combat mechanics to make melee combat engaging and more spectacular for player. When you fight with a blade or a saber, you and your enemy clashing in combat with parrying, blocking, clinching, dodging blows. You duck, you are making one step away to escape a blade.

So for a game such as DA, that have a lot of melee fights, that old combat mechanic will suite damn well in my opinion. Just look at youtube how it looks. Yes it requires a lot of polishing and work on that. But still it's the best option i can think of.
