I've reached a road block in my decision.  I have been deciding which Multi-class I wanted to play.  My desired party set up will consist of Jaheira (Fighter-Druid), Aerie (Cleric-Mage), and Jan Jansen (Mage-Thief).

Initially I was concidering the need for a second fighter and thief.  This would narrow my choices to Fight-Thief or Cleric-Thief.  Yet I seem confuse if i want another Thief or Divine Caster.  After all Jan Jansen is more  than enough Thief for the group.  I feel Jaheira and Aerie would be more than enough to handle the Divine spells of the squad.  With all that concidered.  I was leaning toward maybe a Fighter-Mage.

My question is what Multi-class choice would be best in this group over the long haul?  I'm not asking for the best class, but what the group needs more of?

I don’t recommend a Mage multi because Mages are main and second... Aerie is adequate as a back up but a main Mage needs to put all her levels into arcane in order to be viable.

Jaheira is one of the best melee Fighters in the game and a decent caster, plus I agree that Jan is fine as the party Thief & Aerie is the backup Mage so what’s missing from this party?

‘Turn’ is missing - Aerie will always suck at turning and can’t fight in melee for a long time so your party will have a difficult time with un-dead.

Punch is missing as well - Aerie and Jan have AOE spells but they will level slowly (especially Aerie) which will make Jaheira the highest {and strongest} caster & Druids whittle their targets with spells that disable more than they nuke.

I’d go male (for the romance options) Half-Elf Cleric/Ranger because;
1. There is no npc of that powerful class,
2. This class can cast ANY divine spell... this class also uses the extra wisdom you get from bg1.
3. You will excel at melee combat.

IMO this class is designed to mix it up, yes you can cast spells but they aren’t the main weapon i.e. you cast a ‘Fire Storm’ at one group while your party fights another or you use ‘Sanctuary’ to close the range... This class is not served by engaging in ranged duals against arcane bosses.

Note that a dual class character is effectively the same as a single class when it comes to a main arcane... I know you claim multi but if you are willing to consider a dual then main Mage with a couple levels of Fighter or (as I’d recommend) Cleric is a powerful god child.

I would say you need a tank. Jah eventually becomes Superwoman, but that's in ToB. A Paladin would give you some clerical skills as well as keeping Airhead and Jan from constantly being overrun and ground into turnip mush.

@Ussnorway appreciate your input. Regarding the dual and single class, its not what i'm interested for this playthrough. My primary goal is to beat the game using only multi-class characters. Thus reason for my asking for Mult-class suggestions.

@Morbidest2 appreciate you input. Unfortunately I'm not interested in single or dual class suggestions only Mult-class.

It does look like you could do with a bit more melee power so either a fighter/mage or cleric/ranger would work well. If you want to give your PC a bit more protection against spells then a gnome's your friend.

Nice challenge :D

Cleric/rangers are pretty uber, fighter/mages are even more so, but personally I really love fighter/thieves. All are kinda overpowered, so you can't really choose wrong.

As to what you need more of, I feel that 6 arcane casters is just about right, and another meat shield always helps, so fighter/mage it is.

If you're prepared to consider mods, then Solaufein is a fighter/mage, but you only get him in the underdark. Valen is a fighter/thief you get much earlier, but she's pretty evil, and not that easy to control. By that I mean you give her an instruction to stand behind an enemy for a backstab, but on the way there she changes her mind and attacks from the front. However, when her backstabs land they are brutal.

EDIT Actually it would probably be better to run a group of 4 with a fighter/mage pc, that way your peeps will level faster, and Aerie's turn undead will be useful before you hit ToB. It does mean you have to slog through the early game a bit underpowered, but by the time you leave the underdark it will pay off in spades.
