Yes its pretty tasteless, no people shouldn't be making jokes about it, it is inconsiderate.

But you are voluntarily choosing to read something you find offensive.

It's like Muslims: just because someone drew a cartoon of the prophet Mohammad fellating a pig, does not entitle you to be offended and take a tantrum. Nor does it entitle you to attempt to silence or complain about something that offended you. The exact same applies here, if you are offended by someone using certain language, steer clear of the thread: as I have done.

So far I have ignored the thread which I deemed stupid and offensive.

I am in no ways trivialising rape or sexual abuse of any kind. Just because something offends you does not mean you are entitled to special treatment or that whatever offended you should be silenced: that is not the thinking of a progressive society, that is the thinking of an Islamic theocratic dictatorship who act to silence anything that threatens or they deem "offensive" however trivial.

Making jokes about the matter, however offensive and tasteless in this case, does not automatically mean that you as someone who finds said thing offensive have any entitlement to have whatever has offended you removed or deleted or silenced.

I do not support ANY form of indictment of freedom of speech, and the side effect of this is that sometimes people will say things you aren't comfortable with. If the BSN ToS dictates that such jokes / threads / discussions are inappropriate then report them to a moderator and if deemed severe enough will be dealt with in due course.

Using rape as a conjugation to enunciate a point is perfectly acceptable, even if people find it offensive (in the correct context only; for example: "the incorporation of the Bible into American politics is a rape of the constitution")

TL; DR.... You do not have any right to be offended, nor does your taking offense at something entitle you to special treatment, but I do agree that making jokes about rape is tasteless.

It's called dark humor. Not everyone likes it, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed.

One of my tutoring kids once asked me if I liked "black humour" (german word-by-word translation). I said I did. Let's just say I didn't expect jokes about black people.

Long story short: you can't just label every bs joke people make that might be offensive "dark humour" and grant a fool's license to anybody who is just doing "dark humour".

To each their own.

Not everyone likes the Dark Knight Rises...

Not everyone has the same "threshold" of tolerance towards dark humor or satire either.  You just have to deal with other's having different perspectives of the way this world works.

So you got chased out of the last thread, which talked about a humorous if disturbing story of two characters running towards a quarian and pushing them into cover. And so after getting chased out of that thread, which had more to do with jerks than with making fun of rape, you decide to make your own thread becasue you thought it would go better or something?

Yeah, I can agree that not everyone has the same sensibility and tolerance for that kind of joke.

Oh and your sig+your comment about black humour made me think of this

Hence how someone like Gilbert Gottfried can make a room fall over laughing with his version of the Aristocrats joke... Everyone does indeed have different tolerances on what dark humor is.

I agree with you, and the fact that 'this is just the internet' should be irrelevant. If everyone would give grieve to the people who use offensive language like this it wouldn't be as common as it is now. Ignoring it is just lazy in my opinion.

Uhm, ok, I guess.

Just adding that to me, dark humour has always had something to with making at least remotely witty statements. If you think that, e.g. the comments in that video fall under dark humour, then yes you do have an entirely different definition of that term.

So you don't support indictment of freedom of speech in any way, but if somebody finds something offensive, he should just call the mods so they can lock that thread - and thereby censor it to an extent - instead of voicing his opinion?

Please tell me I completely misunderstood you, because that doesn't make any sense...

Really?

Just to name a few...

You cannot have selecting policing especially on the internet. If you see something that offends you personally report it and move on. If it is deemed to be over the top let the moderators handle it. This act is as pathetic as those Facebook people blaming Mass Effect for the murders yesterday. No one is promoting rape here and no one is trying to make a joke of it. You are being overly sensitive.

No, you are being overly sensitive. I don't really care. I'm just stating my principals and how the majority of society views issues such as rape. I don't care enough to create threads about it and I certainly didn't report anyone for it. I'm not offended. It just reflects poorly on the person making the joke/post/thread.

That room did not, perchance, happen to be composed entirely of people paying Gilbert Gottfried to tell them his version of the Aristocrats joke, did it?

To clarify, not particularly arsed about the origin of this stuff, I just don't entirely buy into dropping any idea of context and audience/location when cracking jokes on the internet.

Get off your high horse you are not the voice of society.

Ever go out? Or see a comedy act? Let me give you 1 example of many.

John Mulaney is a comedian with an act called "New in Town" in this act he makes a rape joke. The watered down version of it... he is in a subway at night alone with a woman and she starts walking faster so he walks faster thinking the train is coming. Ultimately they end up in a sprint before he realizes she's running from him because thinks he is going to rape her. Believe it or not people laughed at this, people which includes victims of rape and people who know people who have been raped.

But why was it acceptable to laugh at?

1. The girl in the joke was fictional.
2. She did not get raped in the joke.
3. Their was no intent to rape in the joke.
4. John Mulaney never advocated rape.

It was funny because their was never a real threat and played on a male stereotype and misunderstanding that could happen to just about anyone.

So...

Did the original post that sparked all of this...

1. Have a real victim? No, it was a fictional character in a game.
2. Did this fictional character get raped? No, she was merely trapped in a corner.
3. Was their an intent by the other fictional players to rape the Quarian? No, they just trapped her in a corner.
4. The OP never advocated rape. He just told a story about how some other party used a rape term online when they used to other characters to trap him in the corner creating a stereotypical situation with 2 large menacing figuring trapping a small female.

Rape is a sensitive subject but you overreacted in this scenario. And I am not saying that as someone who is ignorant to the trauma of rape.

On-topic: Yeah, those kind of jokes are rude and tasteless and whatever other synonyms you can come up with. No, just because it's the internet and nobody knows who we are is not an excuse. But I have to agree with most of the comments here. Report it and move on. As sad as it is, if we all got mad every time we came across an offensive comment, we'd all go up in flames... Constantly... (I'm running out of metapors, I know) Don't let some anonymous stranger ruin your day, especially if you don't know them and never will. Even more so if it's every day.

True enough, but it seems some people think plain crappy and tasteless automatically equals "black / dark humour" when in fact the line between being a comedian and an insensitive, unwitty idiot is a fine one.
The question is how fair it is to dismiss people as "oversensitive when it's just dark humour" in every instance of douchebaggery by labeling it "dark humour" and thinking that somehow justifies how crappy it is.

No, you get off your damn high horse and stop speaking to me like I'm an idiot. Your example of showing how rape can be viewed in comedy does not prove that the majority of society doesn't view rape as a sensitive issue.

And when THE Bleeding f**k did I overreact to all this? You're the second person to accuse me of doing so, when I already specifically stated in my post to you last that...

I.

Rape is not always bad. I love it when my wife surprise rapes me. She covers my mouth and hushes me, whispering in my ear, "Just let it happen..."

Also, she does that creepy line that Meg told Brian in family guy after she fed him that pie with her hair in it..."A part of me is inside you."

Rape is also defined, as taking something by force, doesn't necesarilly (misspelled) mean sexual. My advice, take a chill pill.
