John Mulaney is a comedian with an act called "New in Town" in this act he makes a rape joke. The watered down version of it... he is in a subway at night alone with a woman and she starts walking faster so he walks faster thinking the train is coming. Ultimately they end up in a sprint before he realizes she's running from him because thinks he is going to rape her. Believe it or not people laughed at this, people which includes victims of rape and people who know people who have been raped.

But why was it acceptable to laugh at?

1. The girl in the joke was fictional.
2. She did not get raped in the joke.
3. Their was no intent to rape in the joke.
4. John Mulaney never advocated rape.

It was funny because their was never a real threat and played on a male stereotype and misunderstanding that could happen to just about anyone.

So...

Did the original post that sparked all of this...

1. Have a real victim? No, it was a fictional character in a game.
2. Did this fictional character get raped? No, she was merely trapped in a corner.
3. Was their an intent by the other fictional players to rape the Quarian? No, they just trapped her in a corner.
4. The OP never advocated rape. He just told a story about how some other party used a rape term online when they used to other characters to trap him in the corner creating a stereotypical situation with 2 large menacing figuring trapping a small female.


Rape is a sensitive subject but you overreacted in this scenario. And I am not saying that as someone who is ignorant to the trauma of rape.

No, you get off your damn high horse and stop speaking to me like I'm an idiot. Your example of showing how rape can be viewed in comedy does not prove that the majority of society doesn't view rape as a sensitive issue.

And when THE Bleeding f**k did I overreact to all this? You're the second person to accuse me of doing so, when I already specifically stated in my post to you last that...

My issue is you pushing your own personal agenda in the name of the majority. You said rape should never be touched. Now society is overwhelmingly against actual rape and threats of it as well as over the top humor and I fully agree with that. But society does not share your view of it should never be touched. The comedy reference is your proof. Almost every big name male comedian has made some joke that involved rape in some way or another and yet these acts still get strong reviews and air on national TV. Why? Because society can accept some jokes about rape. If society had a 0 tolerance on rape humor show me the outrage? Show me the articles and boycots and national outcry on these comedians who use it in humor... This is not societies view it is yours as well as a few others but their is no majority.

People aren't as clueless as you think. When Daniel Tosh said it would be funny if a female heckler was raped by 5 guys society let him know it was wrong. Because that crossed the line.

The reason you overreacted is because you responded like someone who was heavily influenced by a personal experience. Not the average person. Like someone else said rape is a sick crime but their are many more sick crimes including murder which is considered the worst by many. Yet you obviously have no issue playing a game where you kill and let me ask have you ever responded so passionately to someone who jokingly said, "I'm gonna kill you." Or any varition of it such as "If you do that I'm gonna kill you." Heck maybe you have even said it before.

The bottom line is a guy posted about another random guy saying "Rape sandwich" on a headset as he blocked his path. If this makes anyone feel sick and disturbed they have a serious personal issue with it. Kinda like how saying the phrase, "I will eat your face," will draw a much more emotional reaction from the hobo who had his face eaten off in Florida then some random person.

But like you said you don't care for all I know you didn't read this. But it was an overreaction. Guy makes a post with no malice and gets flamed for quoting a guy who used the word rape by a few oversensitive people who twisted it into something it wasn't.

It was poor wording of that sentence on my part. That's all lol.

I'm genuinely astounded it got this kind of reply. And even if it was poor wording I still don't think simply saying "it should never be touched" is over-reacting. No exclamation marks or capital letter. I did type it out rather calmly lol.

Here's what I don't understand about people in general. It's somehow rationally accepted that there's an arbitrary amount of time you have to wait until you make a joke about a sensitive topic, otherwise the joke is written off as "too soon".

But why? It's completely arbitrary, and it makes no sense, even some anti-semetic jokes get a pass if they're related to the axis powers in some way because it was in the past.

So here's my question to you, why do you feel that jokes made in the moment are taboo, but if we wait until the future, they're perfectly accepted and acceptable to laugh at?

Edit: apparantly the BSN censors don't like certain political groups, so I replaced it with "the axis powers"

On topic though... no one is winning any argument here. The people still yelling about the rape jokes being insensitive maybe they are, but you obviously are not convincing anyone that did not already agree with you. so why continue? Same question to the people who say get over it.

No one is winning this argument and this thread is completely and utterly pointless...

Michonne, right? Oops, spoiler? The Walking Dead has come a long way from the train wreck that was season two; this last half season was awsome.

If you've read A Song of Ice and Fire, you know the impending season of Game of Thrones will have everyone talking. People were shocked when Nedward died? Just wait.
