OK, while I'm waiting for RTO and the Expansion (Hmmmm...LOL), I have a question of Off Topic nature. I need a game to hold me over and I'm looking at these two. Who would recommend which and why (PC Version):
1. Witcher - The Enhanced Version
or
2. Risen

SO, which do I play while I wait? I have already been through the game 3 times and now, need to wait for the New Content.

Thanks Gunny!

Bang for the buck, I'd say Witcher.  iirc, it's based on NWN (Aurora engine) tech, but it's so heavily modified you won't necessarily recognize that when you're playing through the combat encounters and looking at the user interface.  From a geek standpoint, I like that they took things as far as they did with Aurora.

Unfortunately, the graphics overall are looking very dated, especially compared to newer titles such as Risen and sometimes the combat does feel clunky (like there's a delay between blocking and attacking or there is not enough visual cues coming from the hostile NPCs to indicate when you should block instead of attack).  Graphics aside, the other drawback with Witcher is perhaps the zone loading.  It's not awful, but it's just too frequent and obvious that it sometimes makes me impatient and breaks the mood when I'm playing.  This was also a feature of NWN, I guess.  I still think it's amazing what the devs did with that game though.

I've not tried Risen. It looks promising, but as a pure guess I'd probably think Witcher had the better and more engaging story.

Thanks!  Anyone else have any suggestions?  If there is a game of this type out that I didn't list, please suggest.  I have only heard of these two from various throw in on the various threads here at DAO.  By the way, I have played all of the NWN and NWN 2 games and add-ons (Just an FYI)..

I know nothing of Risen but The Witcher was/is a great game. I loved it.

Gunny: My 'bang for the buck' comment was partly based on the recent ridiculously low pricing I've seen at online sites like Steam and Impulse for Witcher. I'd be more likely to pick up the newer game (Risen) if I were comparing them at their full retail prices, and wait for another 50 or 75% off sale from Steam or Impulse for the Witcher.  Witcher is a good game, but it's so often and readily available at much lower prices than the current $40 I see it listed for now.

Risen is an awesome game and after 7 playthroughs with it I can say that it is the Piranhas at their best Gothic style!

Plus it has a DEMO to let you try it out. It has no scaling tho... don't go trying to fight boars at low level !   =)

I'd really like to see something from Hagermak, but I have to say that maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to post anything--- we don't want Mr. Bartel to be in trouble for going against the official company statement.

I wish it was the same for me. I loved everything except the game play and combat were just too clunky and horribly repetitive. Click click click click click click click thats combat pretty much but the world, lore, characters all awesome.  Thats just me please do not hurt me :)
As for Risen I have heard good things but have not picked it up.

Now that I have participated in the off topicness again :) could we take this to another thread or something. You just never know what is going to set a mod/dev off and get the topic locked.

Oh for f***s sake!  So because the kiddies had to have their e-peen achievements(originally, RTO had no achievements, and certain people screamed), everyone gets to wait.

Everytime you complain about Achievements, people who like Achievements get a new Achievement....

"Successfully Generated A Whine"   It's pretty cool to get these!  Thanks!

Achievements add replayability and entertainment to additional play throughs.  :-)  RtO being delayed to add them is an excellent thing.  It bodes very well for future DLCs.  Woo!

They need to be, y'know, actual achievements though for them to be entertaining. "Finished on Nightmare" "Never KO'd" that sort of thing. The only Achievement you're likely to get from DLC like RtO is "Finished RtO" and saying that adds replayability and entertainment is like saying Star Wars would be so much better if the DVD player printed off a sticky gold star with "Succesfully Watched Empire Strikes Back" written on it.

Risen is by far a better game it is what Gothic 3 should have been.

on topic - has anyone managed to help that guy post the screenshot of the unconfirmed Rob Bartel email stating the issue was relating to Achievements?

Fortunately this thread seems to have survived the Woo hammer and people have calmed down after some much wanted news on the situation. The wide-spread panic was just too much and I apologize for contributing to the original thread started by Mr. Priestly which led to it's inevitable shut-down. I wasn't worried overmuch that it would be delayed and even less so with the IGN interview confirming that the DLC is getting a quality facelift which I think anyone who likes quality content should be more than happy with waiting to get our much-wanted DLC.

As a side note, the panic only fortifies that DA:O is such a fantastic game that it caused people to go ballistic when they heard they'd have to wait a little longer for some fancy new shtuff.

I would say your one of the ones that handled it better then most. You did not go runnign down the street screaming the sky is falling and it is BioWares fault. Basing that off of a flimsy rumor from another poster or game website. People that have no affiliation with BW.
I does seem it slated many peoples thirst for knowledge on the situation even tho both the post and interview seem pretty vague and that many love the game were up in arms. It is just sad that I still see so many acting like a child who just got told they need to wait a little longer for that new toy and are still pitching a fit.

IMHO there is a lesson for many to learn here. Software is not released untill you can have it in your hands or on your harddrive. I have found it a good way to go thru life. Entertainment is here to relieve stress not cause it.

According to Fernando Melo Here, the delay has nothing to do with the platforms.

This is exactly the reason why I made the facts topic, but apparently no one is interested in it.

Wow, this has went all out crazy to start a whole new thread on it. While the delay itself isn't really that big of a deal to me, I prefer to know the details. I've worked in tech support myself for quite a few years and through my experience anytime someone gave a 'brief' overview and not details, it was just a flat out lie and not the real issue. Granted I know if you gave the exact thing that was wrong most people would just be confused, but an honest reason is better than a 'just say this' reason. Either way, it's usually a lose lose situation which sucks cause some of us will actually understand you when you say exactly what went wrong. We can never have a win win here, unfortunately. But I would much rather have a working product than a non working one. Can you add some replayability options in there while your tweaking it? I've since quit playing the game because I'm getting tired of having to recreate a new char each time I beat the game. =\\

Not sure how you can make a fact topic when the one primary source quote I'm aware of is surprisingly fact-free.  Melo writes 194 words about the issue, and at the end of it all, we don't know:
* time-to-resolution
* cause  and steps taken to prevent future occurences

These are the two things customers want to know when problems arise.  Anyone in a support or client-facing service role (in any industry I can think of) know this either directly through formal service level policies or indirectly through experience.

I suppose the only real facts that came out of Melo's writing is that it's not anything that anyone can place any blame about anything about anyone.  Make sense?  I don't think so either.

[edited for clarity and formatting and to fix line breaks that the forum seems to want to insert autonomously.]

There were multiple posts throughout this and the "Delay" topic that updated the community about the progress, even if just vaguely. My topic was designed to gather ANY known official information and put it into one single topic so people will be able to find all the information quickly, and at least reduce the number of posts by a small amount which asks questions that have already been answered. It's also one that I hope to keep updated as more information is released, rather than just a one-time post thing. For example, one of the posts in this thread (before the IGN interview even came out) specified that the problem had to do with the game and NOT console politics, but many people didn't see that post and still speculated about that until the IGN post came out hours later.

I am sad that RTO was delayed, I have Xbox Live points sitting aside for it. With that said though I will just do some more side quests and if the delay is too long I will play through ME2.

I really want to beat the game after I get the King's Armor so that is the only thing holding me up for now.

Ah yes fortunately there is ME2 to divert my attention. *goes to a corner and finds NW!*
