Based on this:
IGN: Origins has been supported by a large amount of DLC from
launch. The most recent of which, Return to Ostagar, has been delayed
until the end of January at the earliest. Is there any explanation as
to why the delay occurred? Is it solely to release the DLC for all
three platforms at the same time, or was there another issue?
Fernando Melo:No, it has nothing to do with platforms
themselves. It's a quality issue where, literally, at the last minute,
we spotted something that had made it through our own testing, EA's
testing and was at Microsoft already. But it applies to all three
platforms; it wasn't something specific to Microsoft, we just happened
to catch it there first. We probably could have gone with it, but it's
something that was serious enough that we felt it impacted the quality
[of the DLC] and we made the choice to delay it to give our fans the
best experience with it. That was the reason behind [the delay] -- we
want to make sure that we don't cut any corners when we do the DLC.
There's already a lot of content out, there's a lot more coming -- we
just announced the expansion pack, and there's more coming after that.
I think the worst thing we could do after that is do anything "to
poison the well," to use the expression, or put fans off from feeling
that they're getting the best content from us. It's a long term
decision instead of a short term decision.
As a software developer myself, IMO, Bioware has three problems:
Problem 1. Quality Assurance. If a game breaking bug can be missed by so many, so close to the release date you need to look at your QA department and overhaul it.
Problem 2. Communication. It would have been so EASY to send an email, or post a locked thread from a community manager at the top of the forum listings that simply said something to the effect of "we apologize for the inconvenience, we have experienced technical difficulties, we are doing what we can and hope to have it out as soon as possible at the best possible quality for the best possible gaming experience... etc etc."
Problem 3. And this is the one that amazes me most. Why in the HELL would you ever post a release date to begin with. Watch how Blizzard does it guys. It's ready when its ready. That SHOULD be the de-facto developers motto.
Good rule of thumb: ANYTIME you set a customers expectations and then do not live up to those expectations it is a failure for your company will have a negative impact. Is it the end of the world? Well, it really depends on how often you do it. But eventually, yes, it will be the end of your business. Believe it or not, the people who flame forums are also paying customers. In fact they are often your most passionate customer, and they do actually end up taking their money elsewhere when they get fed up enough. The last thing you want is a forum free of flamers, because this will inevitably lead to a company without customers.
Please understand, I love Bioware, I like DA:O, I like the DLC model and think its going to really work well, and frankly I don't really care that its been delayed, nor am I surprised. But after a career of dealing with similar dilemmas I just couldn't help but comment on what I see as pretty blatant incompetence, particularly because. It could have, and should have been avoided.
