In what I'm sure is the thousandth thread on similar topics, I'm looking to make one, definitive 1-3 playthrough.  Unfortunately, I'm cripplingly indecisive, so I thought I would poke and prod for some opinions.  Before I begin, I want to stress that I acknowledge there is no "canon" Shepard, and that the story will evolve around the character I create, no matter the class or gender.  So, I'm not really going to ask what class I should play as, because it's not really about what I would do.  I'll start with a simpler question.

If the series were a set of films: how would you view Shepard?  What feels the most like the dramatic, galaxy spanning epic that Bioware tried to create?

Is the Commander a skilled, but otherwise unremarkable soldier, navigating impossible odds at the orders of Anderson and/or the Illusive Man, fueled by nothing but hope?

Or the penultimate tactician, forging a path through the galaxy with a small team, and relying on the ability to outwit all foes?

Is it that Shepard is just lost, having been drawn into a conflict beyond comprehension, and forced to stumble through battle after battle in a mad dash to save the galaxy from an impossible force?

Would Shepard be a self-assured, invincible biotic, the confidence coming from such raw power driving the Commander forward through the endless conflict without hesitation or fear?

Again, I'm not trying to figure out canon.  This is mostly just my idle curiosity, and my desire to find an interesting way to play, if not the most likely.  Feel free to discuss gender/romance preferences, too, but I fear that's been done to death.  Then reanimated by Cerberus and brought full circle.
