Shepard knows what Joker is like. He uses humor to alleviate stress and maintain morale in dark situations. My shep would never chastise Joker for his quips.

Joker's been making racist remarks throughout the series. It's not just jokes.

Hell, he willingly joined Cerberus in ME2, before he knew about Shepard or the Normandy. He joined the same people that tried to kill Shepard repeatedly, murdered Admiral Kahoku, tortured Corporal Toombs, and tried to enslave Rachni and Thorian creepers. And experimented with Dragon's Teeth.

Shepard never had a choice, they resurrected him and threw the Collectors in his face. Joker made a choice, and he always knew they were evil.

That's a whole new debate altogether though. I think Joker makes his remarks about everyone, no matter the species. If you think he's a racist I would say if he was in ME2 he certainly didn't seem like it in number 3.
It would be easy to lure an egotistical pilot like Joker into a job with an organization that has the kind of funding Cerberus has, especially since the Alliance had him grounded.

Shepard has dealt with xenophobes and bigots throughout the series, a good friend and companion like Joker is hardly in the same vein. While the joke could be considered inappropriate, that is the beauty of an RPG. You are supposed to have the option of choosing your reaction.

People in stressful positions, like cops, soldiers and emergency first responders, do make those kinds of jokes. Shepard getting all 'Grrrr!' about it is just the writers making Shep show more signs of cracking under the pressure. I feel it's not really their place to force the reaction. But then, I like RPGs, not fully scripted shootahons.

I seriously doubt cops, soldiers and emergency first responders make those kinds of jokes when some mission has just gone terribly wrong.

But, as others mentioned in other threads. ME3 Shepard is not ours anymore. It is a construct of BioWare and as such, we have very little in the way of roll playing to do with him/her.

Yeeep.

Nope, but this isn't Shepard either.

...what? I've played all three games, I created a psyche for her, there is only one Shepard and the one in ME3 is a phoney. Prove otherwise (protip: you can't).

I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm referring to his Post-Thessia 'joke' about how the Asari "are wishing they had fewer dancers and more commandos right about now".

I've seen a lot of people who’ve wished that we had the option to laugh at the ‘joke’ or that Shepard could've just calmly told him off, but I’ve never seen or read anyone one that said ‘yeah he totally deserved being shouted at’.

So who here thought that he deserved what he got?

Edit: Fixed formatting, Well that was strange.

I think it was a good joke. Perhaps a bit tame. I would have gladly bought him a beer if he had referred to them as the filthy, blue scum-sucking wh*res that they are.

I doubt it...but even if you're right. The reapers harvest a few million asari every day (aside from those people killed in fighting the Reapers). That is not exactly the same as some car accident.

As they do human, salarian, krogan, turian, drell, hanar, elcor, volus, so forgive us for not breaking down in tears for the poor poor Asari, because being reaperised is obviously only bad and sad when done to them, right? After they sat on their Prothean info dump right up until they realised "oh wait, the reapers don't care about our perfect democracy! They don't care that we're super duper peaceful! Shepard, help us! If you don't we'll blame you!"

What was that line? "Losing Thessia wasn't in the playbook"? What makes Thessia so more important than Palaven, Sur'Kesh, Rannoch, Dekunna, Earth or Irune? Why would my Shepard, who found the Asari an annoyance, care one iota about Jokers quip? As far as shes concerned they should have known this was coming and should've come clean earlier. Make some witty comeback, something to show that the player still matters in this story.

I don't remember anyone made tasteless jokes about reaperised humans, salarians, krogan, turian, drell, hanar, elcor, volus,...

I personally would have yelled at him for not shooting down Kai Lame's gunship.

I likely would have remained silent as Shepard did. Joker's humour or attempt at humour is a coping mechanism that allowed him to accept a horrible situation and move forward.

Well, that is my perspective of Joker and his words/actions.

Her tentacle joke was certainly better than Joker's attempts to be funny ;)

I thought it was warranted. Plus my Shepard isn't one to care about Command Procedure.

I can tell you from experience as an Officer that there were so many times I wanted to scream at subordinates, because they royally ****ed up. Not just a mistake, but a full blown idiot machine that could ruin their career. However, I took the smart route and didn't shout because I knew how it would affect my career.

Even when there was a choice, it's still auto-dialoged. *shakes head*

The Joker incident is just a symptom of a much larger problem w/ ME3. To make it more cinematic like Uncharted or Assassin's Creed BW felt Shepard needed to be a bit more predefined. I'm all for Shepard venting and yelling, and it does illustrate as to how much pressure Shepard is under, but it needed to be the player's choice, not forced. I can only imagine the outcry to the forced venting had they kept the original Thessia mission intact, which was Virmire 2.0 where you chose between Liara and the other squadmate.

To answer the actual question, yes and no. It should have depended on the individual Shepard.
