Well to be fair Dragoon Batman has always been male, would look pretty silly if they put a female batman on the cover now wouldnt it?
You do not need to put just only him on the cover, you do not need to put him in such a way that matches the generic style I gave examples of above. You do not even need to put him on the cover at all.
One of the most memorable batman game covers of all time is this one to me and he wasn't even on the cover.
I want them to stop using the generic male character in marketing standing like a douché staring at the player with explosion or some scenery behind him. Some of the most memorable covers in past 30 years had no protaganist on the front cover at all.

I don't see how either of the DA games were written more for a "female audience" than a male one. And the Witcher? I never got what the hype was about the game, I played it for maybe an hour and couldn't figure out the overly complicated controls and I just hated the character. Back on topic, I'd like to think that Devs(or at least Bioware) don't make their games with a gender in mind. I'd also like to know why you think this since you didn't really say so.
Bit off topic, I think they should have taken it "slowly" with the Wticher 2. And really worked with player how the game works. Little by little, you would have learned all the stuff. But it kinda felt like they tossed you to the deep end and said: figure it out yourself!

That was to weed out the fangirls and the unmanly fanboys.

Oh boohoo. I knew someone would say something about :LOLZ U HAS NO PATIENCE! or something.
Well don't worry, people are always ready to defend poor design details if they didn't bother them.

IIRC female protagonists have already been on the cover at least twice: ME3 had that reversible cover, and Jade Empire's box art actually featured Wu the Lotus Blossom front and center.

(That was completely tongue-in-cheek to emphasize the "uber-manliness" of The Witcher compared to the "girly-girlness" of DA -- see my earlier comments)

I really hope Bioware are more creative this time around, they did okay with female flipside on ME3 but other than gender the cover was generic like so many others.
Uhg yes I am so sick of these protagonist in the middle covers male or female! I was deeply disappointed with the release of the new Tomb Raider cover which is also following the same train of thought, even though they have so many other options. Atleast it's better then Underworld's that didn't even have her whole face in it. <.<
I guess you can argue that it's different though because she's coyly looking to the side.

Do you know why they do it?
Because fratboys don't know what the game is about, if they don't see the main character in cover.

1: The guy on the middle is not the protagonist.
2: He is not standing!
3: ......There is no explosion?

Darrah has mentioned that female protagonist will likely be featured in marketing.
Thank you a thousand times thank you to Bioware to think of his female audience! It is rare that studios put forward as their female hero! I do not know the author of this topic ... I want to thank you and I really hope a trailer for our protagonist woman! <3<3
Attitudes are changing and gentlemen if you do not like so much the worse for you, but women are an important part of gameurs! It will take you to!

Not trying to be sexist just curious but for some reason the whole Dragon Age series seems like it is written to appeal more to the female audience, anyone else get this impression? Not having a go at anyone I just find it 'unique', to be fair it would seem most games these days are writen to appeal more to males, I mean we got the far superior Witcher series so I guess it is about time women got a series of games made to appeal more to them, all the more power to ya girlfriend.
Considering the fanbase perhaps it is time to put a female lead on the cover? I mean the canon Warden and Hawke were both depicted as male so perhaps it is time for a female to take the lead?
The have already said they would be using a female character as well as a male character for marketing purposes.

That was a fun vid. So while it hasn't been established that DA is catering to the fangirls, we know for a fact that Bioshock is catering to the frat boys (who are apparently so allergic to a "little girl" on the cover that even a cool "robot" can't counter it. Ph34r teh Little Sister!).

I'm fine with the main character being on the cover. That's fine.
I just don't like it when the're standing/ walking in the middle dramatically doing nothing.
Take these other two concept arts they've done to promote the game that I think would make a better cover that would make the game stand out more.

Haha, yes.
I guess the cover doesn't really matter to people who are already know about the game. But it does for people who just play games and don't really check previews of them.
@Lenimph:
You gonna love this cover then.

Those are both awesome (I kind of want to buy it now). Additionally, both of those would appeal to teenage girls because those shots resemble scenes from The Hunger Games, which involves a badass female protagonist who was a master archer. Hooray for broader marketing appeal.

I would be ok with a female person on the cover, if it is not the typical scantily dressed girl, to attract pubescent males. It's a bit embarrassing for me, to walk with such a box through the retail store.
I agree that I've rolled my eyes before when covers like that pop up.
