Let's be honest. If I weren't posting here, I'd just be reading Mass Effect porn.

The difference is that she's playing on XBox and you're playing on PC.

Are there typically more women on the PC version?  I'm not very savvy when it comes to this sort of thing- I really only like my XBox b/c I like sitting in my living room and looking at the giant screen when I play, but if the environment is noticably more female friendly on the PC- that might be my excuse to buy an awesome new rig and make the switch.

I don't know if more women play on PC, but the PC in general tends to have a friendlier culture for both men and women. There are also fewer microphones. The majority of PUGs I've been in have had no chatter.

This is so darn enlightening! I've skipped ME3 mp because, well, I don't do mp. Not anymore. Same story as the rest of you are posting, and I just don't have the energy to pose as a dude anymore. But now I think I'll check it out.

It's odd how even writing that makes me feel much like a deer during hunting season...

I dont share the belief that Dragon Age is slanted towards any gender. However, I can understand why some Male's express the view, Andraste is widely revered throughout Thedas she was killed by a Maeferath out of Jealousy, there isnt a male Divine which is essentially equivalent to the pope, Flemeth's legend is one that tell's of her "using men until they are spent" and then killing them, High Dragon's are Female, Meridith dwarf's Orsino, Female Qunari are the brains of the operation, Anora is regarded as the person who really ruled, not Cailin. Female Companion storyline's are better written and seem to be more integral to the overall plot. I really dont mind personally, but I can understand someone who says it seems that way.

EDIT:  The ruler of the most powerful nation in thedas is also female, Empress Celene.

Also, the female representation on these forums is amazing. It doesn't say much, I think women are grateful even for equal attention in games, but it might seem that a game this popular with the ladies MUST have been made for them. It cannot be made for both, because guys and dolls like different things (obviously).

This also ties in to the question I have when it comes to your post. Could it be that you perceive it that way because it's so rare to see something so equal? I mean, The Maker is still male, pretty much all of the nobility that we see are male, the qunari are perfectly 50/50 (society stands on three legs, one male, one female and one either), the vicecount in Kirkwall is male, Anora is NOT regarded to be able to rule without a man at all, and I dare you to find companions more integral to the plot than Alistair/Anders. Or did I misunderstand, are you merely making the point that others may see the representation in-game as predominantly female even though it's actually pretty equal?

It's okay- you're in a safe space:happy:- No really, though.  If you think you might enjoy a little mp, I highly reccommend ME3's campaign.  Not that it's the most titillating of combat experiences, and certainly not for the achievements, but the community is just so darn awesome.  If you're looking for buddies to play w/ who you can be sure will be friendly and inclusive- head over to femshep.com- we've got whole threads devoted to newbies and old-timers alike who want some folks to join up w/ on mp.  I'm mandaweb over there, so if you're an Xboxer, you can get my gamertag from there and we can go a few rounds if you like :)

@ Blue Gloves, sorry that that group behaved so badly. Maybe the 25:th time they hear a female voice while playing they actually get the point that women play games too :P

Im sure most male's are aware female's play game's, If it make's you feel any better alot of us Harass, Joke, and Belittle eachother on MMO's as well, I guess you expect a heightened level of sensitivity because your Female, but then expect to be treated like "one of the guy's" or with the same respect that men treat eachother with, which i can assure you, especially in multiplayer's, is very little to none.

Umm... whut?

No I do not expect a heightened level of sensitivity because I am Female. I play Ops in a guild, standing in bad stuff on the ground is not good. And we do tease each other. The thing that is not ok is what unfortunately happened to Blue Gloves

Blue Gloves wrote...

You are not alone my friend!  I very, very rarely ever play with anyone that isn't on my friend list, but just last week I had a little time off and thought- "Gee, I'd really love to go crazy and blow up some pixels today, even though it's the middle of the week!  Woohoo!"  I was so excited to have a few hours off while the kiddo was in school and the house was actually already spotless (for a change) that I failed to think clearly and turn my mike off.  About thirty minutes into a session, I made a particularly awesome and unique kill and said "yes!!!  I am ridiculous!" or some such nonsense, and the response to my feminine voice was IMMEDIATE. And ugly.  I responded by simply muting my mic and continuing to play in blessed silence.  However, after we finished the round, I was kicked, even though I'd literally uttered less than 6 words and had the highest kill count in the group.  It ruined my day completely, and it brought it home yet again exactly why so many women are unwilling to transcend the boundary and try out a game for themselves.

Link to her post

Being treated badly because you just happen to be female is not ok. I play in a group of men and women, we tease each other and have fun. But if you do something stupid while playing, like beating on the wrong boss when you have the fearful-buff in EC then you get to hear it. The point is then that is something that you have done, an action that you took or didn't take like standing in a red ring of bad stuff, not your gender.

Get the feeling that you are of the sensitive sort perhaps.

Wanting to sit in the living room and watch game in giant TV is no impediment to PC gaming. I have my gaming rig in the living room with an HDMI cable going from my PC to the TV. When no one's using the TV, I game on couch. When someone's using it, I switch display to my smaller monitor and play on the desk. The "I play console because couch and TV" argument is a fallacy.

Tangent done.

What you say is true, however, I am extremely picky about the aesthetics of my house.  I designed each room and bought the furniture with the extra money I made while deployed to Iraq.  I HATE it when my husband, who doesn't really care much about what is or isn't aesthetically pleasing, drags wires all over my attractive, hard-won home decor.  I realize that this is not important to others, but it is to me.  Plus I am a neatfreak.  If and when I get a gaming PC, it will be firmly ensconsed on desk in the office.

The MakerImage IPB really?

There is prominent female nobility equal to or greater than male's, Qunari is intended to be perceived as 50/50 but if your telling me All the Men are at War while the Ari-Qun (female) is at home making all the descisions for everyone who is not a soilder....what are you really saying?

The ViscountImage IPB  You must have missed the Codex on how Dumar got his power, and the part of the game where Meridith rule's.

Anora is respected by all of the noble's in Fereldan and other countries Empress Celene called her "a rose among brambles"  Her codex cleary state's she was the one who really governed Fereldan, not Cailin.

AlistairImage IPB As a Male, if find him to be a wuss, My PC had to endure him complain about his responsiblities, Im not the type of person who feel's I should have to encourage you to do your duty or listen to you cry about how you feel, It's not my responsiblity to "Harden" you,  and I have yet to see anything Integral in his plot, but I probably wont because in my cannon he's a drunk.

Ander'sImage IPB The dude blew up a chantry. He will likely go down in history similar to Osama, thats nothing to be proud of.

Isabela stole a relic that got Hawke involved with the Arishok, Leilana is the right hand of the divine, Morrigan is pretty cleary involved in next game in a major way, Wynne and Shale were in Asunder. Merrill and that Eluvian.

Regardless, In term's of power structure, there is really nothing equal about it in Thedas, Female's inhabit the postions of power, and THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. but it's not equal. neither does it make me personally  believe that the game is more for women then men.

I am also really impressed to see the diversity of players here (females as well as gay and queer) and have enjoyed seeing this thread go through some good discussion topics.  I really feel at home in this player community knowing I'm not alone in my gaming experiences. We've come a long way from the days when a kindergartener would be teased for having a Thundercats lunchbox at school...

The gender breakdown of important NPCs is very noticeably equitable compared to most games - this struck me on my first playthrough when I was introduced to Meredith.  There are a lot of NPCs in a story who end up "male by default" when there is nothing keeping them from being female instead. Simply having characters whose backgrounds and interactions aren't tied to gendering (unlike, say, a mother or a brother where that role is integral to the story) who are made female is huge in what kind of story gets told to players.  If anything, this is almost more influential than the gender of the PCs because it's much more subtle in its socializing effect.

Add me to the list of players who doesn't talk on voice chat and who uses male avatars* (often in single-player games too) and who grew up on Dad's lap helping Sir Graham avoid the Wolf and launching chaff in flight simulators on an original IBM.  I've actually made it a habit to always be masculine or neuter online to be left alone so I can pewpew.  When I played WoW, I used Trolls with big tusks and huge Cow-men to avoid any doubt about my meatspace identity (which I find kind of silly to obsess about in online spaces).

This is part of why I really want some games (including DA) to stay single player or to have isolated multiplayer functionality - I have to do a lot more "work" to have a "normal" gaming experience in multiplayer and there will always be types of interaction (voice chat, for example) that I won't be able to do because I don't want to make myself vulnerable to harassment.  I've become very interested in identity issues in cyber-environments and am incorporating it in my grad studies because I think not enough attention is paid to other demographics who tend to be invisible (for being so good at hiding or camoflauge) - the reported numbers of female players who play male avatars in MMOs is vanishingly low, for example, and surveys tend to miss expressions of female player's attraction to male avatars even as the "Lara Croft effect" is widely used for male players.

For those interested in genderbending through avatars and such, Nick Yee is a very prolific researcher in gaming, and has some work where he looked at genderbending in Everquest (outdated, but relevant), including motivations and social impacts: http://www.nickyee.c...us/arch_cat.php

(I actually restarted my first playthrough of DA:O with a female Dalish when I found out that Alistair was exclusively straight - well-played, BioWare, you made me go female for Alistair.)

I doubt any of the early box art concepts still exist, but they were based around this logo and colour style:
