SO ACCURATE
Metal Gear Solid, as a series, is so profoundly pandery to the female/gay male players that it shocks me when people haven't picked up on it.
As for OP... if a game does't actively and aggressively alienate its female players, it's pandering to women? Yeah, no.

I see the witcher & Dragon Age like this (regarding maturity):
The witcher= Game of thrones
Dragon Age= Lord of the rings

I like that comparison, because it also explains all the pro and cons of both games. Personally I never liked The Witcher because sometimes it seems to rely on graphic violence and/or sex only to shout out how "mature" the game itself is.
I don't know if it's actually because of gender issues (it might be) but the more "soft" approach of Dragon Age to such themes, without shying away, makes for a much better and lighter experience. I do watch Game of Thrones, but Lord of the Rings will always come out as a more compelling experience, at least for my own POV on fantasy stories.

I want to nominate Assassin's Creed as one as well. Most of the fanarts are yaoi, and there're barely any straight or female arts there.
A lot of games suffer from a general lack of developed female characters, yet have an abundance of attractive male characters... what do you expect?
Not accusing or anything, just... it is how it is, I don't think it means there's "pandering."

We will have a female character and a male one that we use in marketing. As to the box, we haven't decided what's on it yet.

As for the box, I hope they do what the did for ME3 and have a flip cover w/ both.

I hope they do a double sided one too, if they go with generic protaganist on cover specifically glaring at buyer looking like a lemon while everything else happens in background behind them. If have to make protaganist present on cover I would prefer handled like this and not like cliché DA2 Hawke being a drama queen staring at buyer while brandishing his ego.

However my bigger desire is no protaganist on the cover and having a fantasy scene with epic scenery and dragons on it maybe like this...

Or some cool stylised dragon style logo (only) like how Witcher one had just the wolfs head on cover or Skyrim just has it's logo on front cover, or maybe Flemeth or another character on the cover like the image they had here which would have been far less annoying than the Hawke one they ran with...

If gonna run with the Templar/ Mage war theme then a large battle scene with templars one side mages the other would be okay as long as don't have generic guy standing in middle staring at buyer like a douché apparently uneffected by events going on around him.

Edit: Actually collagen-her-up might be a better term. Ashley and female Shepard both look like they got a lot plastic surgery done between ME2 and ME3.
On the other hand I don't have any objections to the way default female Hawke looked so...eh.

Bahaha. I'm now picturing myself as a mangy wolf, circling around the edge of "gaming culture."
PS. Plenty enough of us ladies like The Witcher. Mostly because Geralt is hot.

Default female Shepard in ME3 looked horrible (in the game at least,) which is weird because the default female face in the first two games was great. I think female Shepard suffered from the same thing Ashley Williams did: they tried to doll her up and add sex-appeal and just ended up making her look goofy and out of place.

There was a
*sigh*
pool where the ME fans got to decide FemShep's default appearence. The one you see in game is the one they chose.

That's good. I almost didn't buy DA2 because I hated the look of the poster boy Duncan-on-crack Hawke. Had they featured alternate covers displaying male/female protagonist I'd have bought one with Default Marion on the cover vs Default Garrett.
On topic, I enjoy the DA series (just can't get into ME--but that has more to do with me and my inability to play those kind of games than the actual writing of the story) and how it does seem to be very female fan-friendly. After years of being forced to play male protagonist in RPGs its nice to be able to play a relatable feminine character. I also like how gender doesn't play a huge impact on the way they present the characters either. A male mage/warrior/rogue is written pretty much the same as a female. Making the PC smart, funny, diplomatic, charming or any number of personality traits that transcend gender.

I don't see how either of the DA games were written more for a "female audience" than a male one. And the Witcher? I never got what the hype was about the game, I played it for maybe an hour and couldn't figure out the overly complicated controls and I just hated the character. Back on topic, I'd like to think that Devs(or at least Bioware) don't make their games with a gender in mind. I'd also like to know why you think this since you didn't really say so.
Bit off topic, I think they should have taken it "slowly" with the Wticher 2. And really worked with player how the game works. Little by little, you would have learned all the stuff. But it kinda felt like they tossed you to the deep end and said: figure it out yourself!
Games shouldn't lead players by the hand. I am in favour of RTDM.

On the issue of having female protagonist on the cover, I do think that'd be great. But there's an element inside me going, "Oh, just put male protagonist on the cover so guys don't construe Dragon Age as girly and complain about it." (Which is the wrong attitude, but still. What would be better would be if no-one even noticed which gender was on the cover, IMO. How do we fast forward to that?)

Not trying to be sexist just curious but for some reason the whole Dragon Age series seems like it is written to appeal more to the female audience, anyone else get this impression? Not having a go at anyone I just find it 'unique', to be fair it would seem most games these days are writen to appeal more to males, I mean we got the far superior Witcher series so I guess it is about time women got a series of games made to appeal more to them, all the more power to ya girlfriend.
I don't know, man. I like DA a hell of a lot more than TW. I mean a whole lot more and I'm very much the standard white straight guy gamer. So it appeals to me just fine.

when it comes to Bioware games how hard is it to add both versions of the protagonist on a cover, for example have a male Hawke and femHawke back to back with weapons drawn
Wouldn't that confuse non-fans? Leading them on that those are two different characters instead of the same character?

What I got from the OP:
Dragon Age seems like it was written for females because (insert bizarre assumption here), so you might as well embrace it, right? I mean, the series is already far inferior to the Witcher, so I GUESS you may as well put a woman on the cover. (Insert patronizing idiom here.)
Yep, that's pretty much my take on it as well. I think the bizarre assumption is that since there's no obvious exploitation of women in it (as there is in The Witcher), it must have been written for chicks right?
