Or, you know... they could have gone for a black or Asian femShep.
Oh, the horror!

There are a heck of a lot difference between a spiritual successor and a games that works mechanically the same.
.
There is, but the target audience is still the same - there's not a D&D fanbase, and a seperate "D&D mechanicically specific" fanbase - it is all the same D&D fanbase. Hence my point why D&D fans would expect a character creation system.
Not every da:o fan is a D&D fan, you know...
Not even everyone who wants race as an option in character charactersation wants if because of D&D either.
I guess I can just one more time say: Da is not D&D and it is never going to be, so your argument sort of doesn't make sense to me.
If you think that DA:O wasn't based on BG , D&D and developed with that audience in mind (albiet alongside other, newer target audiences) then I honestly don't know what to say.
Let me say it one more time IT'S THE SAME TARGET AUDIENCE. Yes with new additions, yes with a twist, but the same set of fans were in mind at the core of it's development. Hence why it had character creation sections at the beggining of DA:O.

If the reception BlondShepard received was bad, I wonder how the reception of the few non-white examples we had was.
And with your choices for the protagonist's skin tone ranging from "shades of white" to "shades of brown/black as found in a plastic factory" it's not as if the user has many options in the CC. Haha, here's hoping the new engine brings some (pleasing to the eye-) variation.

That never stopped me from make a non-white Warden/Hawke, but okay.

As a brown-haired, brown-eyed female I'd like to see some representation for personal reasons, but that ain't gonna happen outside of Lara Croft and Kitty Pryde.
There are also games with brown haired female protagonists, but you have to search a bit.
As example the game Venetica:

Why is this even a question? Of course you can play a female protagonist.
Why is it even a question? Because the last game removed a lot of player agency, It might not be a good question, but given the trend in recent games, it seems like a reasonable thing to ask. You could just as easily ask "So, we can play as other races than human, right?". Or "So, I can equip my team with gears, right?". Or "So, my character is physically capable of at least holding on to a sword, regardless of class, right?"
All of those things are reasonable choices to have available for players in a Western RPG. The last game removed them all, wondering what is going to get "streamlined" out next (for whatever reason), seems like a valid concern to me.
Also: Brunette, or GTFO.

No it's not a reasonable thing to ask at all, even in the slightest.

Broski you just tried to piggyback a argument equating the removal of gender equality in game with the removal of fantasy races and equipment selection. When dwarves and elves walk the world and contribute equally to the production of this game as human men and women do, then and only then will it be an actual equality issue worthy of comparison.
For now ask yourself "When was the last time bioware made a game with a single male protagonist?" When the answer hits you, then and only then will you understand the sheer stupidity flowing between the ops question, your potshot argument and the prisitine logic coupled with biorage that led you to piggyback said argument with stupidity.

SW:ToR had an Asian character in their trailers and box art and as far as I know there was no big commotion over a non-white character (even if she wasn't the PC she was the face of the republic basically). There was also a character that I think was meant to be Maori(new Zealand) but I'm not 100% sure.
Nah, the controversy wont be as big if they aren't the PC.
Or featured heavily in ads.
I'll wait for the day though.

Me too, bro. Sometimes people say "Let's get Chinese food," and I just drive to Burger King. I'm really enlightened, I just can't tell the difference.

I totally didn't mean to come off that way =O I actually got in a slight bit of trouble during my trip to the states at one point because of it. Kinda related - here's a thread on reddit about gender-blind people (with whom I share a neurological disorder).RinpocheSchnozberry wrote...

Understandable- I REALLY don't like playing as a male character- but be prepared for the poostorm you have just unleashed. Also, maybe ask yourself why it matters so much what gender the hero is. I know my own reasons, and not all of them as altruistic and pro-feminist agenda as I'd like, but it's always good to recognize your own bias for yourself.

I just like to play as a guy. I never found almost any enjoyment in playing as female (except boobies and butts
Anyhows, tried playing as female characters, but I always end up thinking: "...should have gone with male instead."

I have almost exactly the same problem trying to play a guy. I've never even been able to make it farther than Ostagar with a dude. You're lucky that so many games already have male protags, so you're not forced to either put up w/ it or just not play.

Hah, true. I'm also white and stuff, so I have a lot of advantages in finding characters to relate to.
I mean, I should be all liberal about playing as female... But it just doesn't sit right with me. Can't do it. I wish there was more option to play as female for those who want to do it thou.
