let's face it, probably everyone here is at least aware of BioWares previous games, even those from before they were called BioWare and is probably well aware that Baldurs Gate 2 was the greatest thing since sliced bread. so what of the non-BW games?
personally I'd have to say Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. it's old, and buggy (thankfully there are unofficial patches which fix most, if not all, of the major bugs) but highly addictive. while the character customisation is sadly limited to only clan (essentially "class") and (with the patch) history (a few stat tweaks and a little background for rp) there's still good replay value, especially due to the vast difference certain clans make to NPC interaction
I'd recomend anyone play it at least three times. once as a Malkavian (warning: incredibly hilarious), once as a Nosferatu and once as any of the other clans
favourite non-BioWare RPG

Guild Wars is my favourite. Only one playable race, but 10 classes (90 possible class combinations, character builds numbering in the billions and party builds numbering in the trillions). You're always guaranteed a unique group dynamic for every mission you play through. The measure of success is less about your level and how good your gear is, and more about how well you combine your skills with the skills that the rest of the team has to offer.

Ultima VII. Ultima is still the best RPG series ever made.
I want to like The Witcher, but not being allowed to create my own character and being stuck with Stone-face No-personality Geralt is a dealbreaker for me.

Oblivion has a great game engine, but I think the actual game is pretty poor by RPG standards. It's a typical Bethesda-style game; they create really detailed worlds, then populate those worlds with boring, utterly forgettable NPCs with nothing of importance to say. The game's saving grace is how easy it is to mod - add enough user-created mods, and it becomes fun to play.

as much as I loved Morrowind, I ended up hating Oblivion. I think it's mostly that my expectations were so high, I expected something like Morrowind but with better graphics, interface and a new story, and instead got what felt like a poor console coversion onto PC with a cliche and predictible story (Morrowind did in fact contain a blatant major spoiler for the ending of Oblivion which was kind of silly). although I did love the Dark Brotherhood storyline, just the rest fell very flat.
I refuse to buy a console just to play the very few decent games that don't make it to PC, so I guess I'm stuck hoping they finally have the sense to port Fable 2 onto PC
haven't tried the Witcher yet, although I'm tempted to pick it up cheap off ebay

Final Fantasy VIII is still my favorite game of all time.
I also really got into Summoner when I first had it on the PS2. Have actually given thought to getting another copy and playing again.

Fable 2 isn't bad, but I wouldn't really call it an RPG. It's a hack and slash action game with some RPG elements mixed into it.

Morrowind and Diablo 2 for me
Diablo 2 has generally speaking a great story. It has quite some playability, and despite the clickfest you have to do, it's very addictive. It has some nice cinematic and... you gotta love the voice of Decard Cain.
Morrowind : Big free world, with imaginably huge number of side quests and side factions. Great story, with a bit of surprise, long, long, long... did I mention long? Can mod it as you like it (I myself made a few mods for my own pleasure) and it's different. It's not the typical medieval glory game, like its sequel Oblivion was. Morrowind is unique with its ashlands and all unique creatures... like the cliff racers... Who doesn't love cliff racers?
