Why isn't the Saber better than the Paladin?

Now let me preface this by saying that if you like the gun just because you like using different guns or you like the way the gun sounds, then that's fine, and this rant isn't directed towards you.

This is a question for all of you who think the Saber is a good gun. Why do you think that? What quality does it have over the other ARs that makes it a "good" gun? If you think it's a good gun I'd like to compare it to the Paladin for a bit. The only thing that the Saber has over the Paladin is a bigger clip size (and more spare ammo), and even that doesn't matter so much because the Paladin's reload time isn't long at all.

So let's look at the stats here, here's the most 2nd most recent balance change for the Paladin, but I figured the encumbrance change was insignificant, as it was only a .25 change on the front end, and for our purposes we'll be looking at each gun at X.

Paladin Heavy Pistol
- Damage increased from [389.9-487.4] to [424.9-531.1]
- Encumbrance decreased from [1.5-0.9] to [1.25-0.7]
- Magazine Size decreased from 4 to 3
- Spare Ammo increased from [16-26] to [21-33]

And here's the Saber; ( I inserted a previous balance change to show the encumbrance difference.)

Saber Assault Rifle
- Base damage increased from [427.9-534.8] to [460-575]
- Encumbrance decreased from [2.0-1.4] to [1.7-1.4]

So let's look, the Paladin's damage is only 45 points away from the Saber's, while it's encumbrance is 50% of that of the Saber. And people say that the Saber is a "marksman" rifle, and if you're not headshotting you're doing it wrong and you need to lrn2play. BUT, the Saber's damage from a headshot is 1437 points of damage (assuming no gear or amps) , and if you were making this argument, then the Paladin has a much better mod for headshotting, allowing the Paladin's damage to be over 1800, which is a substantial difference, not even accounting for the superior fire rate and significantly lower recoil.

The Paladin also has several other good mods (specifically the Heavy Barrel), whereas the AR class has very mediocre mods (like the AR High Velocity Barrel), so where's the advantage in using the Saber over the Paladin?

TL;DR I think the Paladin is superior to the Saber (still) and I want someone to explain otherwise.

So why aren't you using a GI with a Hurricane X all the time?

I had my Saber at X when my Paladin was still at II. I only recently started getting upgrades for it. I just enjoy using the Saber.

You forgot to add that the Paladin has less recoil.

Magazine size. That's pretty much why I prefer the Saber to the Paladin.

Because for one thing I suck with the GI, and two because I like using different guns, but no one has convinced me yet that those two guns are functionally different, and that the Paladin is not better than the Saber. Also I made no mention of DPS in the OP, as I realize that performance in the game differs from on paper numbers.

I made a mention of this in the OP, if you just like the gun better or the way it sounds then that rant wasn't directed towards you, my favorite sniper is the Incisor simply because I find it fun. That doesn't make it a good gun, I just like it.

You're right, I added it in to the OP.

Because it is good. Now asking if it's better is another thread title.

Here are all the things (off the top of my head) that play into the usefulness of a gun

ROF
Accuracy
Range
Weight
Stability
Clip Capacity
Spare Ammo Capacity
Armor Damage
Multipliers
Damage
DPS
Other Effects (ex. AoE, stagger, etc.)
Reload Time

I might be missing some, but compare all those direct in-game effects to saber vs. Paladin, then have a claim actually grounded in something other than "Damage > Damage" or "Weight/Damage >Weight/Damage

Killing mooks in one - two headshots is good enough for me. If I need to kill bosses, I can do that with the Saber. It's not a terrible gun.

Along with having a larger clip, the Saber, to me, also seems more accurate. There are times my crosshairs are on with the Paladin, and I miss. This happens less, or seemingly not at all, with the Saber.

Also, this leaves the pistol spot open for the Acolyte (shield stripping) or Scorpion (high-damaging crowd control)

I'll give the Paladin another shot today.

Also, you do not use HVB with Saber. Single shot damage is so high that you should use EB + something else (piercing mod or perhaps magazine size if AP is used).

While you might have a point, OP, I just find the feel of the saber to be way out of the paladin's league. The amazing look of that AR that is almost as big as the character you play and most of all, that SOUND, makes the saber what it is. Big guns are always a big plus (at least for most people).

cause I cannot equip a paladin and an acolyte. A turian ghost destroys with a saber. Oh and yeah that sound magazine size stuff too, toss a little of that in.

I took it out for a spin with my batarian on silver yesterday and got kick votes after the match as a result. It was far worse than I remember last time I used it. (I scored well enough with it but I assume I got kick votes for not reviving the guy right in front of me because I was trying to kill the dragoon with melee because the sabre was not hitting much.) Just not a good weapon for me unless I can incapacitate the enemy with something like stasis or overload or cryo blast.

This.

Killing 8 mooks in one clip or 3.... which is better?

The stupid thing about the Saber is that, with reload cancelling, the Claymore fires nearly as quickly... and if it's range you want, Widow... (Saber is 80 RPM, Claymore is 64 RPM, and Widow is 70 RPM. The stats sheet actually doesn't mention RPM with reload cancelling)

Stupid thing about the Saber is its inability to one-shot enemies to the same capability as either of these two weapons.

Anything that you need to use (stunning powers) to make Saber servicable, the Paladin is better with. Faster recharge, headshot mod, heavy barrel...
