There is a “Greenstone Amulet” from the inn keeper at Ulgoth's Beard which will block any mind magic from affecting your character... this is more essential in a solo run because that would equal instant death as far as the game is concerned.
FYI if you want us to pass on useful advice then it helps to have more information i.e. race, class and solo or party run?

In parties, I almost always make the Full Plate a high priority. For low level parties, Thac0 also really stinks, so I get any equipment that my party members can use to help with that, such as the +1 short bow, or the +1 dagger, or a +1 long sword for my tanks. The shadow thief armor is usually a luxury item in my runs.
For solo run, the greenstone amulet is invaluable. The necklace of missiles is also extremely helpful for a soloer. If my tanks have low DEX, then the +1 large shield from the Nashkel merchant is sometimes high priority item.
If you intend to clear the basilisk map, the protection from petrification scroll from the Nashkel Carnival merchant is quite helpful, since it lasts 12 hours game time.

True, true.... Im playing as an elf fighter/mage in TUTU and im doing a normal playthrough (Core rules) with party. I'm dualwielding longswords, and use a bow until melee is viable.
Stats
Str 18/00
Dex 19
Con 17
Int 13
Wis 4
Cha 12
My plans for party:
Me
Minsc & Dyna
Imoen (assasin thief using a mod)
Now with Khalid & Jaheira but plans are to take Ajantis and another cleric. Maybee switch AJ for Kivan if 1 tank + Fighter mage is enough melee.

As a Fighter/ Mage I’d put extra inference on wands... even if you fight more as melee because your number of spells per day will remain pretty sad and having some wands takes a lot of pressure off;
Before BG;
Frost – found in a tree at the mines entrance (with 10 shots) this wand is the single best way to deal with the Battle Horrors you encounter at Durlag's Tower & elsewhere.
Monsters – found in a crypt at south-west, Valley of the Tombs (with 10 shots) this wand is guarded by Ghast but any Cleric can dash in under ‘Sanctuary’ without having to fight at all... the summoning limits were not added until bg2 so this is a very powerful item!
Once you get to bg then your need for wands shouldn’t be as chronic however the “Wand of Polymorphing” from The Bogeyman quest in NW Baldur's Gate is simple to get and seriously powerful for two reasons;
1. Zapping plot characters like say the Priestesses inside Water-Queen's House doesn’t make them hostile or affect the loot that they drop in any way.
2. Turning your brother into a rodent is one of the more satisfying ways to win this game... note his saves are high so I recommend leading with a ‘Greater Malison’ to grease the wheels as it were.

I buy the sling +1 at the smithy early on as it is cheap.
I don't buy the plate armour but use charm on the flaming fist mercenary and send him against the bad guys until he dies.
The charm can be a spell, a cloak, or a ring. They all work.
