I think with the backgrounds idea they are implementing- I shall connect to the character no problem (she hopes), even if you cant play them. For me it is the amount of freedom you get to create your character; background, personality, relationships, looks... The more control I have over the character the more connected I get. Thats not to say I dont connect with NPCs ME3 was the most emotional game Ive played for a good while and its all because of the NPCs.

In DA:O - I didn't create the Warden I created MY character that later became the Warden in a story which I helped create.
In ME - I created Shepard; already in a role but I could still create MY Shepard and mould the story into one that suited them.
In DA2 - I created a version of Hawke and played through THEIR story... The most creating I did was the appearance and I think choosing which path to go down A (mages) or B (templars) and I guess who to romance were the only real choices I made in the game that mattered.

None the less its only my opinion and I love all games mentioned, maybe for different reasons but I love them all the same.

I prefer DA:O or ME style honestly.

Yeah that's basically the main point. You create a character and threw that character you connect and the npcs around help you.  But in DA2 you were just making something nice to look at as you played threw some random story.  Either you connect or don't and from what I've read through varies forums a lot of people didn't connect second time around like they did in the first round.  Well third time is the charm or so they say.

I will never connect to any character BioWare creates for this game. Wanna know why? Because it's going to be BioWare's character and not mine. It will be an Andrastian human with a voice and personality all ready to go before I even click on the Character Creation button, same with Shepard for Mass Effect and Hawke for Dragon Age 2. I don't play Andrastians, I don't play humans, I don't sit back and passively watch/listen to the character speak in entire pre-recorded conversations because I always have one ready to go in my mind and listening to some stranger speak through the character's mouth just drives the point home that the character isn't mine. It's a pre-created character as sure as Lee from the Walking Dead and James from Silent Hill; I just get to decide which hair style and coloration this character has (and one of a few set personalities), nothing more.

The silent protagonist is preferable for role playing.

It's already been confirmed that the PC won't be Andrastian unless you want him/her to be:

If all these other things will prevent you from enjoying the game, why are you still here at all?

I could connect far better with Hawke than any of my origin characters. If anything I felt more constrained when trying to role-play Dragon Age origins Characters than Dragon Age 2. I felt more connected to Hawke because he could speak, and show emotion on his face. I'm generally okay with silent character, but when everyone else is talking and you're not it really messes it for me.

While the Origins were an interesting feature in DAO, I never had any problems connecting with my Hawke's.

I loved playable origins, and I hope they return someday (mostly because I thought they were fun).

Personally, I can connect to my Hawke/Warden/Shepard/whomever just fine; the time involved just varies. I connected to my Warden very quickly, and it took me a little longer for my Hawke because I had to get used to how she sounded. I assume the same will hold true for my Inquisitor.

Overall, I'd say it's slightly easier for me to connect to a silent protagonist because they're such a blank slate, but really, I like both. I know that's practically not allowed, but I do enjoy playing both.
