I don't know if this is the right place, and none of my searches brought up an existing thread, but here is my question.
I've done some minor moding in the game, and I was wondering if it was possible to somehow play ME2 using (IMHO) ME3's much better engine/mechanics. I'm talking weapons, mods, powers (combo explosions for instance) etc. I believe the PS3 got a taste of that when ME2 was released there, but I don't know if there are any projects that might be working on this idea, or even how feasible it might be. I thought this forum might have some input on the idea.
Playing ME2 with ME3 system/engine

After looking around the ME3Explorer site I would say that Yes, this is theoretically possible, however the ME3Explorer Tool is not yet at the stage where it would be possible, and I believe what you are asking for is one of the dreams of those behind the tool.
Personally, I'd rather see Mass Effect 1 using Mass Effect 3's combat. In truth, the only thing putting me off replaying that game is how awful I find the combat.

@Sil: I always seem to be in the minority with this, but I actually enjoyed the combat in ME1. It felt a lot more sci-fi. Dudes would be throwing powers around and take plenty of shots to go down. It was great when you were fighting a Krogan and you'd get it down to zero health and then he'd put on immunity or regeneration or whatever it was called, and just charge at you.
The only thing that was kind of broken was that it was so easy to get those OP spectre weapons and just blast through anything from about half-way through. There was zero point in buying any weapons other than those because otherwise you'd find the weapon you just bought lying around in the next area.

Agree about ME1, except for biotics. Biotic powers in ME 2 kind of sucked and once you got rid of shield and armor it was just easier and quicker to shoot people. ME3 - the awesome is back with 'splosions.
Bringing the ME3 engine to ME1 would be a big win, but the differences seem quite a lot larger. I don't know, but I think it would be a pretty big step considering the very different mechanics, enemies and maps. ME2 would seem a much easier task to start with.

I think for me, it was a combination of the gameplay not being polished enough when it came to things like taking cover or moving around or the millions of choices of equipment for all characters and doing it all on the fly annoyed me too. I preferred how Mass Effect 2 had you just editting the armour of yourself and only doing it when on the Normandy, although I do feel there needed to be more components.
I think playing Mass Effect 2 kinda spoilt Mass Effect 1 for me. I adore ME2, but it's combat was more polished, and it made it hard to return to ME1. I do aim to though, eventually.

Mass Effect 2 would be the better one to start with, especially if.. some amazing person got it so you play through Mass Effect 2's storyline and then it goes into ME3's.. with added cut scenes to show all your old crew abandoning ship before you hand yourself in and.. Sil, don't get ahead of yourself!
I do feel Mass Effect 1 would work for Mass Effect 3's gameplay and engine. It'd require some edits to how the various enemies work, but on the whole it'd be amazing. All you'd need to do is add in the old style weapons, and add a bunch of armour components to simulate the various armour sets of ME1 and it'd be fine.

So basically you wanna do what people do with Baldur's Gate I and II? That could be cool if after the collector base you could go to Earth and land to start ME3

This would be awesome specially with what maximazed proposes, going to earth after the collector base, landing and starting ME3 would be sick.
