A blanket solution of "hide weapons" would have potential problems with some scenes, so unfortunately I wouldn't consider it trivial. Situations where weapons did need to be drawn in a cinematic, and stuff like that. Might not be too difficult to do. I wouldn't know the finer details of what all is involved, unfortunately.

How about equip and unequip?  In DAO, we were allowed not to have a weapon equipped at all.  NWN made it easy to equip and unequip weapons (or combinations of weapons) from the hotbar.  Is DA2's forcing us to have weapons equipped all the time driven by the need for scenes to work?

Honestly I'd be happy with pretty much any solution that gets rid of the damn gap between the weapon and the character. Even if it just magically hung there, but did so up against the armor I'd be happy. (Yes, I know clipping issues and all that. Unfortunately, the knowledge that a problem is difficult to fix doesn't make it any less annoying.)

On a serious note, I thought scabbards were a REALLY nice touch in Witcher 2. It must be something that costs a lot of resources because the majority of fantasy RPGs suffer similar problems to DA.


It's more an issue that Geralt is known to always have two swords at any given time, and nothing else. Even then, when escorting a chained NPC around, my swords actually ended up clipping like mad through the scabbard (the silver sword in particular), so there's other issues that come with having the scabbard. I agree they are a nice touch, but I think they are easier to do with a fixed character and less customization.

It's not so much immersion for me as it not looking pretty.

I wonder if it would be possible to have the sword go into the scabbard, and then make the blade invisible after it is fully in.  Then it wouldn't matter if there was any clipping since you couldn't see it.  There might still be clipping as the weapon was drawn or sheathed, but that's no real bother.

That make sense. I noticed the problems you mentioned too. Sometimes I'd reload the game to fix the problem. That was kinda annoying. It was still nice to see cool scabbards used in a fantasy RPG.

I agree, these things don't really bother me much at all.

But....on a similar note, with this amazing new game engine(I mean that, good engine), will we see bowstrings or flowing hair, capes, etc?

My bigger issue has been more that you run around with this glowing magic staff while pretending to be a mage. I would love to see wands as a weapon choice.

I agree that if you're playing a mage and talking to a templar and you have a staff on your back, it's killing immersion.

Perhaps you could do it like this: Outside in the wilderness mages would still have their staves on their backs, but in places where it's likely to run across templars or other chantry agents who would like nothing more than stuff you into the tower or kill you, your mage characters would hide their staves. You could even make it into a cutscene when one of your non-mage companions advises you to hide your staff because you're going into a templar-zone. It would certainly help with immersion.

Same place they hide the 3 suits of plate mail, 5 Great Swords and 2 long bows they're carrying around, probably.
