So in the very opening sequence where Shepard is walking through the CIC at the very, very beginning of the game...the Normandy passes Jupiter and then Neptune. During this time, Joker is heard in a Voice Over saying: "Arcturus Prime relay is in range..."
if they are still in the Sol system wouldn't the Charon Relay be the closest? The Arcturus Prime is on the other side of the Charon Relay and is the only way in or out of the Sol system.
I seriously never noticed this inconsistency till I started a fresh playthrough.

Are you sure it is Jupiter and Neptune. They could be Arcturus' planets.

Positive. They used stock images that NASA has provided of both planets. The 'Great Storm' on Jupiter that has been there for decades is nearly as famous as the planet itself.
Further, you can't FTL to Arcturus from Sol.....thus the need for the Mass Relays.

I know what the images are. That doesn't mean they represent in-game Jupiter or Neptune.
They also used the image of Mars to represent Klendagon.
On the other hand it is likely an oversight.

Yep, Neptune might look like a lot of similar planets in other systems but that's unquestionably Jupiter right before the mention of the Arcturus Prime relay. Unless there are two spookily similar gas giants I'd say that's a genuine stuff up - good spot, you win ten internets. :-)
Could headcanon it though. Something about it being a range calculation of the relay they're aiming for rather than the one they're just about to use. Isn't that the right relay for Eden Prime? Can't remember....
Edit: Just checked, no it isn't. Oh well.

Or maybe Joker was indicating that Arcturus relay was within jumping range (i.e. a relay jump to Arcturus was possible).

I always figured that we were in the Arcturus system (It is my understanding that that is where the shipyards are so it makes more sense then having the Normandy being built in Sol, at least to me.) and that they just had a planet that looked like Jupiter, but then again, if you listen carefuly to Joker when landing at the Citadal for the first time it sounds like he is calling the Citadal Control Tower "Alliance Tower" so it's possible that it is simply an oversight.

Jupiter like planets may well be ten a penny in the galaxy. But with a Great Red Spot of about the right size in about the right place? Too much coincidence for me. I liked caradoc2000's suggestion that the reference to Arcturus was that the jump to Arcturus from Charon was now possible.
Alliance Tower could be an oversight but first time I heard it I assumed Joker was talking to a control tower that dealt with Alliance traffic on the Citadel. Never thought it sounded off until you mentioned it. Now I'm not sure what to make of it.
