No, he's absolutely right. You're cheating one way or the other. Why waste countless hours grinding an exploit when you can actually type a cheat in the console and actually go do something fun?

I have to agree.  If you have access to the console and then waste hours and hours on these exploits to gain money...that's just not too bright.  Then again, buying materials from different merchants, combining them and then selling them for a profit isn't really an exploit in my book.

*shrug*  Whatever floats your boat.

Starfang is questable and is arguably the best sword in the game. Wade's is decent armour and is inexpensive (partially questable). So some top notch stuff doesn't really require cash.

I've had one character out of eight that had all the really best available bling. I'm not planning on repeating that. It just isn't needed.

Starfang is a DLC sword, though the Keening Blade, Yusaris and Ageless are questable (though I mentioned you get a break on swords).  Wade's superior still costs you 10 sovereigns (which isn't exactly cheap), and then It requires a 42 strength and doesn't perform as well as 38 strength Evon's mail.  Wade's regular is crap, it's not even worth killing the High Dragon for it.  It's good if you're fighting a dragon (which is a cruel irony), but otherwise it's pretty mediocre.  The other sets you find: Juggernaut, Legion of Dead and Effort (you have to buy a few pieces) aren't all that great either but are serviceable.

Let me be clear. These aren't something I would personally do because first, I don't have the time, and second, I hate grinding, even in an MMO where it makes some sense. I just don't care for the comments saying people are stupid for not cheating, which is basically what a lot of people are saying. If someone doesn't consider these exploits, it's not your place to tell them they're dumb and they should just cheat.

I think we're probably in agreement.

I like being frugal in game (it saves me time), but grinding seems silly. If I want to craft something, I'll do it in real life and make something useful and tangible.

But this isn't an MMORPG. If you want to mod the game so all the darkspawn are wearing clown clothes and wielding seltzer bottles, it's your game.

I think I can see your (overal) point, but the question: What would be the difference? is begging.

The end result would probably be for vast majority the same, everyone would get the stuff anyways at the end, just if the items were quest rewards collecting gold would not be essential, and it would re-prioritize quest orders for some. We can imagine the best staff as reward for the Circle or the best amor for Orzammar. As of now players can decide What do I want buy/wear instead of where do I go and what do I have to do to get it?

I would guess that preferecnces for looting tables, rewards, or gear avaiability and such are highly individual, though it is possible to see why Bioware have the system we know in place. The trend of "buying" stuff, instead of "earning" is ever present.

As an observation, I think it would be best if NO ONE KNEW WHAT WAS "THE BEST" (fill in the blank). Think Real Life: What is the "best" tank in the world? Which is the "best" sniper rifle? Which fighter plane is "the best"? The answers usually boil down to personal preference and/or personal knowledge. In game context, with _actual_ ROLEplaying, once a character acquired something that was "mighty fine" or "damn good", would he then insist on haring off to find something even better? Especially when he's got a time-sensitive mission to accomplish.

Instead of a "Material Girl" (or Boy), many of us are simply Material Gamers, collecting everything just because it _can_ be collected, and for the sense of accomplishment from having completed a set. (And the developers obviously understand that, or why else have so MANY sets to be collected?) And literally, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that. "Fun" is whatever _you_ think it is. If someone gets their jollies grinding out moneymakers, then more power to them! If their idea of "fun" is to create mods that bypass challenges, then more power to them! Or using cheat codes. Or deciding to run through the game dressed in only their undies. Whatever.

There is no "wrong" way to game. There is only "wrong for _me_ to play the game."

[Sorry. I seemed to have wandered onto a soapbox.]

Agreed, but you do realize you're fighting the human urge to tell other people how to behave?

I wish you well in your battle.

I always find it amusing that people will abuse exploits to get gold/xp and feel much better about it than they would if they had just used the console commands to conjure up some gold, despite the latter method being much quicker.  Posted Image

I wouldn't count the potent lyrium potion method as an exploit at all.  Master Herbalism is an advanced skill.  It makes perfect sense in the game world for you to be able to earn a living through the use of that skill.

Actually, having made a Potent Lyrium potion, I would be loathe to part with it!  It seems that you can never have too many Lyrium potions, Health poultices, or Injury kits.

Cake.  Eat.  Want both!  Waaahhhh!

1) is a exploit

2) would have been fair if there wasn't unlimited supply and demand.

3) can be turned into a exploit, how much elfroot can the elf army use? but it's really the unlimited supply again that is the main problem.

so 2-3 wouldn't be exploits if there was limited supply on merchants.

Shameful Admission: I only posted in this thread to slip in a reference to the song. It wasn't even a good one, but that's what I get for posting in the early morning.

Anyway...

If you're gonna cheat it does make more sense to use the console (if you can) than to go about exploiting the poorly designed aspects. Much quicker and same effect. Though I'd highly advise against cheating on your first run. That'll just ruin the game for you.

Yeah. I don't see why everyone seems so personally offended by folks who want to play the role of horse-trader/merchant in the game. Not how I want to spend my time, but if you enjoy comparing prices, figuring out who sells cheaper, pays more, etc., that, as far as I'm concerned, is a legitimate role-play mechanic.

Or if you want to roleplay that you've "conjured" gold out of thin air (via the console) then by all means, enjoy your single player game where it doesn't matter because you aren't getting some unfair advantage over other players like you would in an MMO.

Or, if you don't care about roleplay and story and just want a bunch of crap... whatever you enjoy doing.
