I've been following Dragon Age since the beginning, and it's been sad to see the game go from inspired to Baldur's Gate, to a Mass Effect insoired game in DA2. DA3 seems like it will be Skyrim inspired.

Seeing as Project Eternity seems like it will be going for the old school, inspired by BG route, how do you think the two games will compare? DA3 will obviosuly higher production values but will this end up creating a better game?

If anything, Dragon Age already has a better art style, as far as my opinion goes.

Well, if you get the digital versions it won't be possible to hold either of them up without lifting your computer.

I'm guessing the physical copies of Project Eternity will be heavier, especially with the more expensive backer tiers, so Dragon Age 3's box will be easier to lift.

Does that answer your question?

no idea. But honestly it doesn't matter in the end.

I think Project Eternity will appeal to people who prefer the silent protagonist and classic gameplay elements that have been permanently removed from the Dragon Age franchise.

Project Eternity seems like it's not emphasising companions very much, which makes me suspect I won't like it as much.

I have no idea. Compare how? In terms of profit? PE got a chunk of cash from me sight unseen, just for the attempt.  DA3 I may or may not pick up used from Gamestop at some point, depending on the demo. You now have 1/100000000000 of the data you need to find your answer.

Two very different games with very different design choices and goals. If you like one, play one, if you like both, play both.

I't quite literally too early to say, as we have very little information about either game.

Project Eternity will focus more on the "old school" isometric style, while DA3 will ikely be ore cinematic yes. But how well will either be done? Dunno.

No contest Da3 wins..This game looks cheap and boring . As did Fall out 1 and 2.

I suspect that on both a critical and financial level, DA:I will do better than PE. PE is a niche product designed for a niche audience. It's also being created by Obsidian who have a rather horrible track record when it comes to executing their designs.

I say this as someone who's played Alpha Protocol and think it's a great game.

Obviously DA3 will be the better game because of all the bisexual LI options. Romance is one of the most important elements of fantasy storytelling, and look at the malarkey Tim Cain wrote when asked what kind of romantic subplots Project Eternity would have.

Tim Cain wrote...
So if I were to implement a romance subplot in Eternity - I wouldn’t. I’d examine interpersonal relationships from another angle and I wouldn’t confine it to love and romance. Maybe I’d explore it after a “loving” relationship crashed and burned, and one or both was killed in the aftermath enough for them to see if it had really been worth it spending the last few years of their physical existence chained to each other in a dance of human misery and/or a plateau of soul-killing compromise. Or maybe I’d explore a veteran’s love affair with his craft of murder and allowing souls to be freed to travel beyond their bleeding shell, or a Cipher’s obsession with plucking the emotions of deep-rooted souls to try and see what makes people attracted to each other beyond their baser instincts and discovers love... specifically, his love of manipulating others. You could build an entire dungeon and quest where he devotes himself to replicating facsimiles of love, reducer a Higher Love to a baser thing and using NPCs he encounters as puppets for his experimentations, turning something supposedly beautiful into something filthy, mechanical, but surrounded by blank-eyed soul-twisted drones echoing all the hollow Disney-like platitudes and fairy tale existence where everyone lives happily ever after.

I cancelled my pre-order as soon as I read this, Project Eternity is going to be the worst game in the world.

Project Eternity compared to DAI?

You really want to compare a 2D retro RPG to a Skyrim-Dragon Age mix?

Project Eternity wants to appeal to nostalgic rpg fans beyond the age of 30. Of course there are plenty of people who will play it, but only because it's like in the good old times. It will never have the success of Skyrim or Fallout 3.

DAI has a lot of potential if made right. Mixing the freedom and exploration of a TES with the storytelling of Dragon Age (/ Mass Effect) could lead to the most awesome RPG of 2014.

Bull****.

I'm a decade off 30 and I can't wait for PE. I really hate this mindset amongst gamers where if you like anything pre-the current generation you must be blinded by nostalgia. You don't this crap nearly as often if you like old books or films.

Anyone expecting DA3's gaemplay to be anything like Skyrim's is setting themselves up for serious disappointment.

as far as I know PE is an old-school style game, while DA3 will be a modern game with shiny eye candy and cinematic design. So basically they offer completely different experiences. My opinion is that DAII and PE do not need to be against each other as It all depends on what you want.

I have higher hopes for Project Eternity than DA:I, if only for the fact EA will not push for Project Eternity to appeal to a mass audience by being more action oriented and dumbing down on everything else.

I wouldn't go so far as to compare them though. They're not really in the same league in terms of budget and all. Which isn't to say the bigger budget game is always better. Big budget =/= quality game. Just look at ME3:pinched:

I agree with what you said, I played Alpha Protocol right up to the point my save game became corrupted and the only solution was to restart the game and I just haven't felt like doing that yet.

I have sponsored Project Eternity, but if you look at their boards its pretty close to what BioWare's are like with comments being made.  The problem that I can see with Project Eternity is the people that are voicing their opinion feel even more entitled because they invested in the game instead of just buying the finished product and this might cost Obsidian in the long run if enough investors feel burned by the direction they went.

The big difference between the two products is this, BioWare is trying to make their games more mainstream to attract a larger audience to their games and Obsidian is making a game less mainstream to attract a niche market.  Only time will really tell the answer to your question.

I think people who actually like RPG's will like Project Eternity since they're focusing on recapturing that traditional fantasy RPG feel that helped make Dragon Age popular in the first place, but which most gaming studios dismiss as unmarketable. Those that like action and cinematics will like DA3.

I think they are games that look to deliver different things, and hope that both are highly successful and greatly enjoyed by the people that pick them up.

I think that Project Eternity will appeal to people who say things like "it's for people who actually like RPGs."

Who cares?

I sure don't. I'm interested in both--individually.
