Ok so at my camp, when I talk to the representatives from each group that has joined my cause (Dwarves, Mages, Elves, Redcliff, etc...), I can ask them "Do you need anything?" Each of them has some specific thing that they'd like in order to improve the strength of their forces (like gems, runes, etc...). But after they tell me what they need, the dialogue ends, and I see no way of actually giving them any of these things. Is there some way to give them the stuff they ask for? How is this done, and when?
Thanks!

Theres a crate, etc. near them on the floor, like the mages, has a crate, you drop the runes inside the crate.

I don't think it actually upgrades them in any way. Maybe it gives you MORE of them to use in the battle, but I can get through Denerim using the same army over and over without running out (except Mages or Werewolves, who you seem to get very few of, and suck).
Basically you just use the crates in the party camp and turn in the required items for some XP.

wiki: "Investing resources into the various factions will (where applicable) generally result in improved weapons, armor, or both"
Have absolutely no idea as to what cap you can improve them though.

I've noticed no difference in their gear from testing it a few times. It just seems to be a way to get experience if you want it.
Not like it matters much, the Denerim battles are a joke. You can just charge in with Aura of Pain and kill all the non-lieutenant darkspawn in a few ticks they are so weak.

Yes and yes to above.
I never used the armies except against the archdemon and that was only to see how it works.
I think the army improvement part have been neglected by the devs, it's too vague for player to understand anything from it.

You don't get bigger or better armies. You just get xp from each donation. And you can donate until the cows come home.
Edit: Some people use it as an exploit to level up (mind numbing, if you ask me, but to each their own).

I believe the army differences are things like the Elvish archers getting Yew bows instead of Ash, Ash instead of Elm. The net effect is that they have better range and inflict more damage when they hit. There is probably some requirement for donations before they shift up a tier. Whatever the changes might be, there's no way that _you_ would see it (unless you can hack the code). The size of the units won't change and an Elf with a bow looks like an Elf with a bow; a Dwarf with a melee weapon and shield looks like a Dwarf with melee weapon and shield.
What they're armed with never concerns me; I only really use troops to keep the darkspawn off my back while dealing with the archdemon anyway. If I can afford the contribution, I make it; I _know_ at least that much is good for some XP. Money and items left over in Inventory aren't going to be of any use to me after the battle with the archdemon; might as well get **some** utility out of them.
Now, if it turns out your leftover Inventory carries over to the start of the sequel, that would be an entirely different matter. (But I think _that_ is extremely unlikely.)

I can confirm that giving them resources does infact strengthen them, granit you have to give a whole lot to see any difference.
Example, i gave roughtly 120 soverns to the redclif solders and saw that unlike the time i gave them nothing they were now mostly all wearing plate instead of leather. this of course leads to them surviving longer when you use them. As for the cap to what they will actually increase, I am not sure. I do know that once they reach a certain strength the number you have avalible goes down due to them being stronger. Mages for example if upgraded quite a bit you would have only a mere 12 or less at your disposal instead of the normal amount, however those 12 would have stronger attacks.

You can also tell the upgrade level by the in-game comments they make at the camp.
p.s.
I must be the only one that likes using mages but then my tank (Morrigan) is largely immune to fireballs.

Pity that we don't really see much of a difference even if we do donate IMO. Would be awesome if, assuming we donated enough, our soldiers would've been equipped with Silverite weapons & armor for one thing...

You get a few more guys and their stats are slightly better if you upgrade enough. Worth it more for the exp (Not a exploit) it was created as repeatable for players to max out level 25.

I've given every rune in the game to the mages and they come out with all lightning attacks that do not stop, and then given nothing and watch them cast a weak fireball against a dragon then do nothing but autoattack till the stood in the blue swirlley long eough to give me new mage.
You really notice the difference withe the elves. 3 stacks had them doing 7ish dmg vs an emmisary. Previous run I gave about 30, i did not move my gate party 1 step toward the doors. nothing lived to reach me.
so yes it matters

hmmm... was hoping someone has figured out how many metal fragments they want for max. I give them everything that drops in the game... and metal fragments are the one thing you can't buy for the Dalish. Though you don't need that many to help them. A good but very vague gadge is the level of armor the Dalish merchant sales. The armor/weapons he sells will upgrade based upon the 'level' the troops are at. I really wish there someone would create some chart to show how much many metal fragments they want for max because I would like to experiment with traps some... lol But the desire to mess with traps fails to inspire me to spend my own time... so guess I don't really want it that badly. lol
Oh! All I know is that if I donate three 'stacks' of Elfroot, Deathroot, and Deep Mushroom the only thing they want then is metal fragments... might be a little less than three stacks but each stack only costs one or two sovereigns... and that is very small change for me. If you don't know where to buy them? Dalish merchant has an infinite supply of Elfroot, Deathroot, and Toxins. Ruck in the Ortan Thaig of the Deep Roads has an infinite supply of Deep Mushrooms.
As for the other armies, I just save every rune I get and only actually use Grandmaster runes - then donate the rest to the Circle army... I find it almost impossible to side against the circle... I can side with and rationalize Branka easily enough but the Templars? are evil incarnate to me. Naturally there seems to be only one solution for the Dalish/werewolves and that leaves me with Dalish Elf army with a random encounter of defending the former werewolves.
I also lewt everything and donate all appropriate stones to the Dwarfs... I have noticed that having at least one mage with 'Death Syphon' or 'Death Magik' on in the party makes lewting a lot quicker... as the act of 'draining' the body appears to make it lewtable much earlier than normal.
