can some one explain why dragon age, age rating is 18. I have just played Assassin's Creed 2 and it only had an age rating of 15 it was a lot more gorey there was bad language and a lot of sexual innuendos in the game. I haven't being play dragon age for long and my kid who is 11 has watched me play some of dragon age and really wants to play as yet i can't really see a reason why he can't

Assassin's Creed 2 may have innuendo.

Dragon Age's is just shy of sexual content. The Desire demons are also pretty "sexual".

Don't forget the bad language, the darkness of the setting, the relatively persistent gore, nudity... It deserves the rating. The Darkspawn and Archdemon also add some horror to the game.

DA:O is not suitable for an 11 years old. You shouldn't even let the kid watch it imho. Stuff like regular combat isn't a big deal but stuff like on your way to broodmother is a big no no.

Dourmat...

Well...as the parent, if you want to let him play it...then go for it.

but:

be well aware that you are then breaking a number of laws dependent on your country, and if in 6 months time, your son decides to go and have sex, use language at you when he doesnt want to do what you tell him, and/or kills the school bully with sword (long knife)....

then:

Dont come here blaming the game...it has an age rating for a reason yes?

Cery sarcastic yes I know, apologies, but all true. My mother let me watch whatever I pretty much liked when I was a similar age, but I was very grown up for my age, and she did a wonderful job of teaching me the diff between fantasy and reality (reality is much more disturbing and violent)....but had it turned out diff...who's fault would it really be...the films or my mothers?

The average 11 year old knows the difference between fantasy and reality. 11 year olds aren't retarded.

Uh, yeah. Kids aren't stupid, they're cowardly. What was your first instinct when you got caught doing something wrong? That's right, to lie about it. "I got the idea from a video game." is the same as "I just came in here and the couch was on fire."

Unfortunately, stupid parents and sensationalist media actually take it as gospel, and these kids who do horrible things get to shift the blame on to this generation's scapegoat. You know, not too long ago people were blaming all the evils of the world on rock music.

In other words, you would give your 11 years old child DA:O to play? Do you have a 11 yo?

I tried that once and stuck to my guns so hard my mother almost started to believe me. Then she remembered who I was. Posted Image

It depends on the 11 year old, y'know, but I'd err on the side of HELL NO. I know each generation is more technically adept than the last, but even as an 11 year old in the 21st century I think he would find playing this game a bit much to grasp. At the very least, he'd have to forget everything he knows about real math to learn RPG math, a proccess which is difficult to undo.... trust me on that one. While most 14 or 15 year olds would be fine with the game, I think it would be more work than fun for an 11 year old and more than a little inappropriate.

Nope, no kids. No real desire for them, either. If I did have a child though, what I gave them to play would be on a case by case basis. I don't see Dragon Age as being any worse than what I was playing at 11, and I certainly knew the difference between right and wrong. I've never even hit a person before, and yet I spent much of my childhood from the time I was 4 onward playing "violent video games." Except my parents, siblings, and friends played them with me, too. Mortal Kombat was a favourite of mine, as was the Resident Evil series and GoldenEye.

My mom felt virtual violence was far less jarring than what's regularly in movies now, or the news, or sporting events. Or, hell, the Old Testament. She didn't let me read that until I was 13. Have you seen what's in movies rated PG13 these days? Monsters, murderers, stalkers, sexual content. Everything on TV that isn't a reality series is a crime series with graphic violence, as well.

Point is, it's up to the individual parent to decide what is and is not good for their children. I'd never let a kid of mine below 14 play Grand Theft Auto or games of its ilk, but Dragon Age? Mass Effect? Sure. There's a lot of reading involved, problem-solving, and learning battle tactics.

My siblings, myself, and a few friends of mine had been watching some pretty gruesome, raunchy, etc, stuff before we'd even hit eleven and I swear, the urge to go on random killing sprees is only an odd occurence. That and the average mini-gun unfortunately comes with quite a hefty price tag these days... go figure.

I'm trying to remember what the hell I did for fun when I was 11... I mean, at that point, SNES and the Genesis were hot sh*t, parents were up in arms about technicolor body fluids in Mortal Kombat and I think the most hardcore game I'd ever played was Final Fantasy II (US). I'd probably seen some naughty cartoons, but definitely no 3D combat simulators that let you sex people up while you're relaxing between battles, oi. Though what I would have given for one...

If I had children, I honestly wouldn't let them play DA:O. At least if they were just 11.

Kids are retards, honestly.

I was gaming it up pretty hardcore when I was 11, but that was because I was in and out of the hospital and in a wheelchair for most of that year. It sucked, let me tell you. Thank god for Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, and Myst.

The point in question is...a lot of 11 year olds do know the diff...there are more who don't.

Also, whenever somehting 'bad' happens....there is ALWAYS some game/film/other media the kid (and doesnt have to be a minor - an 18 year old is still a kid) that is deemed to have had a major factor...

Point in case: UK, some years ago, 2 'children' killed another 'child'....they even admitted it was because they got the idea from watching Child's Play....

Now, imo, most of these 'incidents', the perpetrator is not playing with a full deck....but the film was banned and there was outrage.....

Now I ask you, why was the film banned, when it has an 18 certificate, why were two 10 year olds (or however old they were) watching it? Not the films fault that some mentally unstable children happened to watch it is it?

That is my point. yes I over exagerated, but I did so to make a point which obviously went right over your head. If he wants to let his son play it, go for it, nothing to do with me, not my business, but you just KNOW that if it goes wrong...he will come here blaming Bioware.

And that was my point. Understand better now?

Well, I wouldnt have given my kids this kind of game when they were 11. Not because they didnt know right from wrong, but because I find some ideas and scenes in game more than disturbing for that age. Broodmother for example. Not the scenes so much as the idea behind it. I know my kids would have had very bad nightmares from something like that.

I really wouldnt mind sex scenes (what some people would) since I had open discussions about the matter with my kids when they were very young, and the scenes in game are quite normal. Not even so much the violence in battles, blood and gore. But the idea of body possesions or demon babies - no.

My kids had very vivid imagination without enticing it with such ideas and I felt as a Mother that I had to protect them from certain things at that age. I do believe that average 11 years old is not capable of understanding everything in game in proper perspective.

I get your point, and of course BioWare would be a great scapegoat for a bad parent, but your insinuation that video games or other media actually drive children to commit heinous acts is, quite frankly, fallacious. People have been killing each other since the dawn of time, even children. Some people are just bad people, and blaming it on outlying factors shifts the attention off the individual.

I hate it when people justify what these people do by giving them arbitrary "factors." Nothing fires me up more than people blaming entertainment, or mental disorders. People with mental disorders aren't less than human, and the vast majority of them certainly don't go around shooting people willy-nilly.

Bad people are bad people, and those bad people shouldn't get a pass because their mom called them stupid, or they watched Saw, or they suffer from some form of anxiety disorder.

Ah, it seems I'm a bit your senior, Warden... Posted Image ... sorry to hear about your health troubles, but I'm glad you found solace in some kick-ass games. Sadly, those weren't available when I was 11... people were still wondering if Ellen was a lesbian when I was 11... that's how long ago it was. "Mature videogames" were as foreign and unthinkable an idea back then as a good U2 album would be today.

I'd say I'm young, but I sure don't feel it anymore. Gonna be 24 this year, and I feel like the years are just slipping away now. It's funny how when you're young, all you can think about is how cool it would be to be older, and then you get there and you just wish you could be young again. I miss my mom's weenie beanie pizza, and not having to pay a mortgage, and being blissfully ignorant of the world's troubles.

Edit: I should add I got better. Well, as much as you can get from being hit by a car. There are ongoing complications that I'll deal with for the rest of my natural life, but then again, maybe I'll get lucky and they'll come out with robotic limbs in a few years. They can rebuild me, they have the technology!

Hey, 11 is old enough to fight Voldemort and learn magic at Hogwarts, so... ;)
