Why are so many people playing gold PUGs when they clearly can't hold their own?

I joined three matches today (before I got tired of this sh*t), two of them in progess (wave 2 & 3) and the first thing I hear are several downs - a foreshadowing of what was to come. The third match was an actual lobby and from wave one people were dying left and right.

And this hasn't been a fluke, it gets notably worse every week as more and more people venture into gold that clearly have no place there. PUGs used to be fun but it gets more tedious every day, which brings me to the point: What drives these people?
It can't be fun cause dying all the time, bleeding out and wiping doesn't provide a lot of it. Neither can it be credits as there's a good chance the team won't make to (and through) wave 10 anyway. They'd earn more credits with regular silver extractions.

So what is it that makes it almost impossible to find even a single proper team mate in gold PUGs nowadays?

Newer players? Players who stick to bronze/silver? Players who are trying out a new class?

I don't mind it too much if they stick on lvl 2 and above consumables. Shows that they are at least trying. With gear alone, I'll kick.

this is something new? ... lol hardly i quit playing gold PUG waay back when platinum was introduced because of this exact problem, and still have not really gone back other than to get 25 gold extractions for one of the banners.

IF i were to add friends who i knew could play gold i would prob go back, but i'm a loner who is antisocial and i really just get annoyed hearing people use their mics 99.9% of the time, so i just slum it in silver, and deal with it that way

whats worse is I played gold PUG for what about 6 months just fine, until this lil problem finally got so bad that i couldnt stomach it anymore

I outscored a gold PuG on my very first game on PC with a mantis 1 and a salarian engineer 1. Granted Sirian was carrying us but still, what the hell was that guy doing all game?!

The only time i'll quit a pug lobby is when I enter wave 2 or 3 and hear

"teammate offline" *revive sound*...."teammate is down" *revive sound*

I've had both good and bad luck with PUGs for instance: last night the first one ended in a wipe, but the next 4 were all under 20 minutes. Your own sample size is too small to generalize. Also, we tend to remember the bad ones more than the decent ones.

I've been playing gold recently, and I can only "hold my own" with paladin and maybe asari/drellguard. Even then, I have bad days still where I even suck on those classes, but I promise I don't play gold more than twice if I can tell I'm just stinkin' up a storm. xD I can def say that I tried gold awhile back and had to go back to silver because I was doing the same thing you're describing. Dieing left and right, not being able to kill enough to do my 1/4th of the work. Unfortunately you can't do anything about PUGS because , well, mostly PUGs are players that don't visit the forums. Not all, but a decent %. I do have to say I don't feel like the forums have made me a better player, though. Any build I've done up to this point has not changed nor has it been completely different from what would be considered "good" on any class other than the fact that I still can't wrap my head around how OP TC is or know how to use it to that effect.

What helped me the most was when I got confident in silver and tried a few successful gold matches I made friends that I could add to my FL and learned tips from them as much as possible both through watching their example and asking questions. Those bad players won't get any better unless you're willing to do random PUGs. Who knows, even with the failures you've had today, maybe one of those players will be slightly better next time they try. Or will take a different approach to their gold character(s) and/or tactics. You may have failed personally, but may have helped someone else get closer to being good. :D

Even when you try to help some people learn you get some real jerk responses.

Stikman: "fyi, the GPS doesn't benefit from smart choke and armor piercing"

Unknownbutthurt: "u put your forehead on my nuts"

Stikman: "bring em"

Because they can. And hope for the best.
Only need a couple of good players and luck to be around 70-80k richer by the end.

I actually have been thinking lately that i might start hosting gold matches again, and just filling my blocked players list with the people who shouldn't be playing gold. the only problem with that is that i may end up blocking good players who were just lagging or something,

I think it's about the store. The amount of rare and ultra-rare weapons and characters can look very intimidating to a new player. They want to get the good stuff as quickly as possible so they want the higher payouts of gold matches.

I play PUG gold about 1/3 the time and the quality is pretty good overall.   I do have a restriction that I will leave a lobby if somebody is not applying consumables.   I usually bring Armored compartments just in case the other guys won't use rockets when needed.  However, with the PUG that use consumables, they are more likely to use rockets/gels when necessary.:wizard:

'hold your own' is vague phrasing

I can kick ass with my Fury, but only in a group, because Fury sucks as solo.

So if I'm the only one left, I'm probably going down.

otherwise I can get the top score

At least some of them are probably trying to stop sucking. You get good at Gold by playing Gold.
