Why are so many people playing gold PUGs when they clearly can't hold their own?

All I do are PUGs. Haven't done Gold in a while. I'll get geared up with consumables only to have the leader exit the game in during RD1 when they die. Not worth it.

About a week ago was my last gaming session on gold. I join a lobby, see a guy with geth plasma rifle II and cryo ammo I or something. In a gold lobby. Think you're the s**t for sporting a level two weapon, not a tree but certainly no less than two? Heck no, I proceed to vote kick. Must have figured out that I was the one casting the vote since I just came in, and he returns in equal. I had Claymore III and AP ammo IV, but let's not get into semantics. I wait a minute, maybe two, see that apparently my would-be team doesn't mind having to carry his corpse throughout 10 waves, think for myself "why am I even trying" and leave. It was maybe my 10th lobby and I quit the game without playing a single match. Every f%(#%ing time same story!

At least some of them are probably trying to stop sucking. You get good at Gold by playing Gold.

Most likely reason right there.

It's all pay and practice. You see there IS a learning curve between silver and gold. Most of those people are probably good at silver, and they want that shiny gun that higher pay can bring closer. So they risk gold, hoping that with luck there'd be at least one or two good players to do most of the heavy lifting so the FNG's can take pot shots at the enemy and see how it's done.

I know I've been carried. I am not proud of it but at the end of the day, credits are credits. And I have carried. I actually take a bit of pride in that fact when a match is done.

EDIT: And what is this damn stigma with "low tier" weapons? Some people can rock these guns so hard that the guy with the Harrier X cries in a corner.

I do it for challenge points. Five more gold matches & I'll be out of your hair.

Yeah. You can't get better at Gold if you never, uh, play Gold. It's rare that a player goes from Silver to Gold without some transitional hiccups.

Because it pays more. If you play only bronze/silver it will take a very long time to unlock everything. I dont like playing with them, but I hardly blame them.

That kinda thinking is the reason why gold PUGs are what they are. You get good at gold by grinding lower difficulties and obtaining GEAR. I don't care how godly skilled you are with you human soldier and Avernger X. You'll still end up getting carried by TGI with Harrier I.

And while posting what you're doing on that same BSN to a thousand strangers who dont give a damn. Your logic is impecable!

I outscored a gold PuG on my very first game on PC with a mantis 1 and a salarian engineer 1. Granted Sirian was carrying us but still, what the hell was that guy doing all game?!

Shall I post the scorecard....

Where else are they supposed to get better? Play it enough, although badly, and eventually they will learn and get better.

Myself, I can hold my own in Gold and do pretty decent, but usually with a few downs. I know I need to learn survive without needing too many revives. Also need to be able to clutch rounds where everyone gets grabbed.

my main problem is that some hosts have terrible connection (or just due to distance/regional issues with ping). I can clutch most other rounds as long as I dont have to deal with ungodly ping.

generally I'm less fussed if they use gear and consumables. shows they are trying. if not, gtfo

Here it is then:

The guy who came 2nd in this picture is a friend of mine who is relatively new to gold. The guy who came 4th was a PUG. As you can see, VerySeed with a Mantis 1 on a level 4 Asariguard and no gear or consumables managed to outscore him. I think this pretty much sums up what you're trying to say, OP. And I agree with you, I've never understood people who play difficulties they are not ready for, and constantly die. I don't imagine they learn anything or that it is in any way fun. I guess the only real explanation is that they want quick credits and don't realise they could probably get them quicker just by playing Silvers, and actually having fun in the process.

IMO, the reason Gold PUGs are where they are is more likely the bad habits players pick up while grinding on easier difficulties (for one thing, no Silver player worries over much about only having a rank 2 gun).

Well, that and veteran Gold players moving on to Platinum.

Things that work great on silver will get your butt handed to you on gold. How is someone going to learn this unless they walk into a gold lobby and try it out? The problem is when they realize that their supercool build isn't viable anymore, you know, the third or fourth time they die on wave 1, it's a tad too late to respec and bring a real weapon. (I'm looking at you, Mr. Katana-with-omniblade, go home.)
Either that or they're topping the scores on silver, walk into a gold game, and are just so terrified of all the things that they curl into a ball.

If you can't carry 3 mediocre players through Gold without using equipment, you shouldn't PUG Gold anyway. Simple as that.

But most of the time I get 1 decent player who can compete with me and we clear in under 25 minutes.

You gotta start somewhere. I wasn't amazing at gold when I first started on it. Now I consistently top the scoreboard (for what its worth).

When I was new to gold, I just made sure I was helpful. Spam stunning powers or other support... following teammates around and covering their backs... From that, I learned to rambo like the rest of us.

I hate the bugs who rambo, but can't hold their own. A word to all you PUGS who are playing at a difficulty that is higher than your skill: just stay with the group!

Mostly because they'll likely get carried to at least wave 4 which nets them more credits in less time.

They are out in full force on the Xbox. Then you send them a message as to why they don't use a single medigel, you get responses like "**** off!!"
